I've been Word hunting lately and ran out of stocked up dragon souls from previous kills. I just killed two, but they didn't give me a soul. They didn't degrade or explode or anything, they just simply died. I've been revisiting old word walls out in the open. Is this a glitch, or intended to specifically avoid actual "dragon hunting"? If the latter, that seems very silly.
Edit: 4 down, only 1 gave a soul. What is up with this?
Yeah I have about 50 souls and all the shouts unlocked. This was one of the things te 1.2 patch was to fix and funny iv had it happen more since the "fix" than it did before. This patch was a total fail.

One thing I've noticed is that I sometimes don't get a soul if I kill dragons in places where I've killed one before (certain peaks where they eventually respawn).

That's the thing, though. I got two souls just fine by revisiting some of those peaks. Several of them didn't though.
Yay we get fadIng projectiles at the cost of: dragons skins not always rendering, Dragons flying backwards, not being able to absorb dragon souls, book shelves no longer working, and I have entire buildings that won't even render anymore! Like the mill in river wood. Good trade, at least the projectiles fade...

The truth hurts, bottom line is the patch made so many problems, one of which you started this topic about. I was simply pointing out that te cons way outweigh the pros for this patch; it was not a personal attack on you and I'm sorry if it seemed that way.
I haven't downloaded the patch and I just killed a dragon last night. No soul. So its an issue unrelated to the patch. Though, I guess it wasn't taken care of in the patch. svcks.
I noticed something with the dragons' souls: if I fight them in places where there are the external word walls several times, dragons give me no soul. However, all those randomly spawned I kill while explorating provide me a soul.
I had/have a 35th level thief character that I had to restart, simply because he hadn't seen a dragon in 15 levels. Don't know where they went. Just gone and I hadn't gone very far in the main quest story line. Too busy sniping from the dark!
That can be truth about respawning dragons but how about the place you never visit before? I am near Eldersblood Peak (not discovered and i never was in that area before) the blood dragon already flying around the ward wall on the mountain. When i get close to the mountain he fly down to me and attack. No soul absorbed... I tried reload the previous save game before i discovered area and i made few lvls then i decided back there and see what happen. I discovered area again and i see same dragon still flying around and no soul absorbed.
How are you killing them? If you use lightning and disintegrate them, then I think it's a known glitch. I've put the taser away in general because of that...
i have the same problem this happened with dragon i killed south of bonestrew crest. if i walk to his dead body nothing happens. it is a dragon that respawned there after i killed the first dragon that was there and learned its shout a few in-game weeks before. this is the first “respawned” dragon i kill for a second time; anyone knows if this is a glitch or if this is intended part of the game to prevent players for farming souls?? i’m confused… (i'm on PS3 on patch 1.3 btw)

I was going for the 20 souls achievement after 1.3 patch, I noticed that less than half of the dragons give me souls (killed 8, all of them were respawned dragons).
So at least eventually you'll get them, just keep trying. (on PC)

i don't really care about souls themselves actually i pretty much permanently have 2 souls in advance of ever shout i learn anyway cause i like to progress the main quest slowly... it's more of an atmosphere problem to me actually it just doesn't feel right to be next to a dead dragon and see nothing happening... like "well [censored], so much for being dragonborn i guess...*walks away wistheling*..."
From what I've seen it's related to respawned dragons on/near world walls out in the open (I've had it happen at Shearpoint and Skyborn Altar). Random spawn dragons or new ones still get absorbed. Perhaps these dragons aren't supposed to respawn unless a quest needs them to do that?
I've just encountered this problem for the first time, is there a console command that forces the animation and soul absorption, so I can fix it manually? (on PC obv, and latest patch)
It's actually not a glitch.. Some dragons are spawned without skeletons which means you can't really get their soul without glitching the game...
You see, on normal dragons, they have a skeleton under their skin and upon death, the skin gets disabled and all that spell effects happens then you gain a soul and the dragon only has a skeleton left..
The dragons, that don't give you souls, don't have skeletons and if their skin gets disable then it is impossible to search their bodies. So Beth prolly intended this on purpose...
