Dragon path and also Nav Mesh Questions?

Post » Wed Jun 20, 2012 11:38 pm

I first want to thank any one for helping me on this. I realize it takes time to answer a question and want you to know I am grateful.

My first question is to do with dragons and the path they take when flying. I have build a modded area outside area with a building and some walls.

I laid down some nav mesh for the actors paths to walk about. The dragon seems to fly through my walls and building. Now granted I have named him Ghost Dragon
and I like the effect. How ever I want to under stand why ?

Second Question is when I laid down the nav mesh I discovered what I believe to be a cell boundary or something as the mesh wont go beyond this point and you have to start new
mesh on the exact other side. My question is do I need to connect these in some way ? Is there a reason for this and a way to get around it or ignore it ?

Thanks again for any help

Not sure about dragon pathing, but of the cell boundaries: While the render window has focus, hit the 'B' key to toggle borders (thin yellow line). Note that along these borders are usually thick green lines visible when in NavMesh mode (Ctrl+E). These signify interconnected NavMesh edges which can be set up by lining up two triangle edges such that their vertices are close'ish, then finalizing the adjoining cells.

Justin is right. The navmesh cannot be extended over the cell border. With navmesh off, the border will be a thin yellow line. With navmesh on, the connected tris have a thick green line along the border. After you have them all lined up, finalizing makes the connections. However, it is best if you can avoid making any changes to the navmesh around the cell borders so that you don't affect the adjoining cells. On your side of the cell border, you have to have a vertex that matches each vertex on the other side- in all three coordinates. IT only has to be close, but closer is better. You might check to see if anyone has done a decent tutorial on exterior navmesh. I found a good landscaping one here: http://tesalliance.org/forums/index.php?/topic/4663-ck-basics-lesson-3/

They might also have something on exterior navmesh.

To prevent dragons from flying through your buildings, add collision boxes in them. For example, go to Riverwood in the Tamriel worldspace. You'll notice that all the buildings have white squares in them. That tells the dragon there is a solid object there, and to avoid it. Thus, they don't fly there or through the buildings.
