Dragonplate in random loot

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 11:46 pm

First of all, forgive me if this is a duplicate. I'm new to the forums (though I've been lurking for a while now), and I haven't seen a thread discussing this. Anyways, I was doing a tour of Skyrim's towers. I decided to check out Widow's Watch, as it is one of my favorites. I killed the witch there and went to loot the chest at the top of the tower. I'm talking about the Expert-level one behind some boards. After picking the lock, I was surprised to find Dragonplate armor. I was under the belief that Dragonplate was only craftable. Is this a glitch, or is there a small chance for it to spawn? I'll post pictures when I can.

It's possible, just very rare. One of my characters found a pair of dragonscale boots in Shriekwind Bastion, north of Falkreath. I believe she was around level 55 when that happened.

You do find occasional dragonplate loot. I assume it's meant to be ancient.

It's very rare, and only at really high levels. Probably 50+

I was handed a daedric sword as the reward for a quest...next quest, same person, I was given an iron shield.

The randomizer must have been really bad.

Does it help if you have the 'chance of better loot' perk?

The perk says you have a 50% chance of getting better loot, I believe. But I haven't really noticed much, still find iron crap, and leather. Even at level 81. Really the only thing I ever find useful is Daedric Arrows, and found one of the dragon helms before. Not sure which one. Otherwise, I usually have to craft anything I want.

Found Dragonplate Helm and boots in loot and Deadric helmet and armour in some chests.
Never found good loot like that in my first playthrough though, usually only got Ebony items at best.

Do you have to have the dragon smithing perk to find the armour randomly or can you find them without that perk? (same for daedric). And just how rare is it? I wanna know if its worth getting the smithing perks or spending them on something else. I think it would be fun to dungeon delve for ages to find these rare armours, give me something to do.

Also do cleared dungeons respawn?

No you can find them without the smithing perks. No one but the developers know how rare of a chance, but I am pretty sure it's a rare chance. Especially the armors. Cleared Dungeons do respawn, I'm not sure how often. But it does happen. Sometimes I go in them and there is nothing there, but sometimes there is.

They are not as rare as Daedric armour. So there is yet hope.

I found an unenchanted dragonplate armour at some insignificant bandit camp... just right after I crafted one for my follower and run out of dragon scales for crafting other dragonplate parts. So for me it was more of a WTF moment rather than a pleasant surprise. I was also unnder impression that dragon items can only be crafted and never found as a random loot. Also, that fact kind of made all the smithing perks somewhat less worthy. Then again, that's the only dragon part I've come accross so far.

the lockpicking perk increases chance of "special treasure" by 50%

so if there is a 10% chance of special treasure in a chest, it's instead 15%

This does add up significantly over time though... more random magic items = greater chance you'll find something you want

It is incredibly rare. In my 300 hours I have found one piece as random loot, but it is possible to find it at least.

I have found a couple of shields and a plate helmet so far, I think you just need to keep on farming dungeons that have Bandits/Draugr ruins ect.

Awesome! So I don't have to waste perks on smithing in order to get daedric and dragon armour :) I was just worried about running out of dungeons to clear lol.

I only found one piece of Dragonscale armour in a shipwreck off the coast of Skyrim. I already had full glass at the time and was one perk away from getting the ability the craft my own. Think I also found a Dragonplate shield sometime after that but can't remember where.
