Dragons and Winterhold (Mage’s) College…..

Post » Sun Jun 03, 2012 1:57 am

Bethesda, can we PLEASE!!!!! get rid of the CONSTANT dragon attacks at Winterhold (Mage’s) College?

Every other visit results in a freaking dragon attack! It’s really quite boring, and annoying, especially if you’ve already got a ton of dragon souls, and plan on staying in the Mage’s quarters, or doing tasks for the college.

Yeah I know you need 3 souls per shout to unlock its full potential but dang! Do all the dragons need to be pooled at the college!?!?!?!?!?

And even though I don’t have all my shouts fully unlocked, I’d still be +12 right now if I didn’t kill another dragon and got them all fully unlocked!!!

Bottom line: Can we lessen the congregation of dragons at Winterhold and spread them elsewhere as every other visit to the college fighting a dragon is tiresome. In fact I’ve started ignoring them when I can.

BTW I’m at level 53 with a 100 in at least armor, destruction, and two handed weapons so they’re not exactly a challenge!

Anyone else feel the same?

Stop fast traveling everywhere. I've seen precisely 2 dragon attacks at the College of Winterhold in well over 100 hours of playtime with 3 different characters.

This is why I don't start the MQ until late in the game.

Can't say I've ever been attacked at the college. Dragon attacks are pretty rare for me though as I never fast travel and my timescale is 8.

Fast travel is definitely the culprit.

I fast travel to the College whenever I need dragon bones/scales, one of the few things you can almost always count on happening.

Actually a very easy place to fight dragons considering the tight quarters and cover everywhere, perhaps one of THE easiest spots to fight a dragon in the entire game.

Aren't the dragon attacks random events? If you spend a lot of time around the college then it would seem you get attacked there all time, but it's really just because you don't go anywhere else for them to attack you. I had the same thing happen to me when I kept fast traveling to Morhal.

While it is true I fast travel to the college, I fast travel to lots of other places as well. HOWEVER.... only in Winterhold is there a dragon attack every other visit! It really is annoying!!!

Oh BTW I also travel, on foot, quite a bit. I had two horses die on me and refuse to get anymore. Beside traveling by foot is much more fun.

Anyway only Winterhold seems to have this congregation of dragons. Perhaps they're working on their PHD in destruction or something. All I know is I keep whipping their [censored] to the point that I'm bored with them.

Fix it so they're not bundled at Winterhold. That's all I'm saying.

I've seen 3 dragon attacks at the mage college. About 5-6 at Riverwood. And about 4-5 in various other areas when I'm out walking through the wilderness (and the first one at the west tower, of course.)

There's a Dragon that respawns near Winterhold. It also appears by Whistling Mine. I imagine it's the Dragon of Mount Anthor, but I haven't confirmed it personally.

I, too, have experienced many dragon attacks at the college, but it's also true that I fast travelled there a LOT.

In the game I'm playing 95 percent of the "random" attacks are at the Winterhold College. Now if you rarely visit the place, don't own the Archmage's quarters, don't do assignments for the college, then yeah, you probably won't notice what I stating. But if you visit the college a lot like I do (at least 2-3 times a play) then you'll see a lot of attacks.

I think it might be set this way intentionally because it's an easy place to get lots of souls. If you've got all the dragon shouts (20), you'll need 60 dragon souls to fully utilize them - http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dragon_shouts

Basically if you need dragon souls visit the college frequently.

My issue is for those you don't need them but utilize the Archmage's quarters as a base of operation has to fight a dragon every other visit, at it gets tiresome. Yeah I've got other houses, but I like the Archmage quarters. I saying Bethesda should decrease the attacks there as it's an annoyance for those wanting to use the college.

On the other hand, it does provide good practice in developing techniques to fighting and killing dragons since they're so plentiful there, but a level 53 and a billion souls I think I passed the test!

And again, I fast travel to a lot of places all the time, especially Whiterun, but the ONLY place I can guarentee a dragon at is Winterhold!!!

Just do what I do at this point.

Don't fight them, the Mages at the College deal with them pretty handily.

Hehe, not really. I've had one of the mages say "I bet on the big guy" and continue on like there's no dragon in site. Huh????

Anyway I already stated that I've been ignoring them, still.... Trust me, It get's really annoying if you live at the college. And though I've got homes in Whiterun and Solitude as well (which doesn't get attacked), I utilize the college a lot.

You can guarantee Dragon's to appear in every dragon lair. They respawn every 10 days. Like I said before, it's probably the Dragon of Mount Anthor that is roaming around the area. Not much you can do about that except visit Mount Anthor and bring the fight to the dragon before visiting Winterhold.

I don't care what dragon it is the point is the bias towards Winterhold. The game is serverly balanced to respawn them in Winterhold. This seems to be intentional by Bethesda.

In short you're very likely to run into a dragon fight every other day at the Winterhold college than any where else in the game. That's the point.

Uh, you seem to be missing my point. If you visit Winterhold every 10 days, then yes, you'll probably meet a dragon there. Why? Because there's a dragon lair with a respawning Dragon nearby. That dragon lair is called Mount Anthor. I haven't experienced constant daily dragon attacks in Winterhold in my game. It sounds like you're diving into hyperbole in any case.

Same here, nothing more annoying than the 14th random dragon spawn.

I have to ask, do you play skyrim on a ps3?

Ugh, dragons aren't even hard just f**king annoying. Ancients are the hardest in the game and you can kill them without getting hit with a single attack by using dragonrend and 2 hand destruction spells with impact perk. You would think they would learn their lesson and stay away from the man-dragon with 100000 souls absorbed but nooooo....

I use Whiterun as a home and I don't get attacked there much (except according to the script). I go to the college semi-regularly for various quests and I too have gotten a fair amount of dragon attacks there at the college -- maybe 5 or 6. Sometimes the dragon gets mauled by a whole bunch of destruction wielding mages. Sometimes none of them do anything -- it seems to vary. I haven't been able to figure out what the pattern is.

I kill them, the skeleton ends up in the common area, and it's gone the next time I come back (otherwise there'd be a whole pile of them in there).

This is the answer to your problem. The more time you spend in one spot, the more likely a dragon will attack due to its random nature. I think it might calculate every time you enter and exit a dwelling (or the College), as well as when you fast travel to an area.

I do get attacked a lot at the college as well, but that is also where I spend the most time storing and swapping out gear.. I am the Archmage.

You might have a point there, though I spend a fair amount of time in Whiterun as well but never run into dragons. And I do walk outside the city as well, but again, no dragon attacks like those in Winterhold.

Yes, there are random attacks all over the place but Winterhold college by far gets the majority of them. I would like to see this this balanced out as it becomes tiresome real fast for those of us who are the Archmages of the college.

It just seems to me that the developer wanted an easy place to be able to get dragon souls and Winterhold is it. I know at least of my dragon souls came from there.

Nope, you seem to be the only one that feels that way. My Breton mage lives at the college and has dealt with one dragon attack in the whole game there.
