Dragons rare for anyone else?

Post » Wed Jun 06, 2012 7:02 am

I've been playing for almost 100 hours and I've killed less than 20 dragons. Most of the dragons I killed were word wall and story ones. I haven't done the main quest past diplomatic immunity. I have a lot of words but not enough souls to unlock them! I WANT SOULS!!!! Where can I find spawn spots?

Outside of Riften is a good spawn point for me. But I really haven't seen that many dragons either, and a lot of them just fly around and then leave. I have yet to find all the words let alone unlock them all.

In my game, they seem to have made a habit of attacking Riverwood

Btw, 1 dragon every 5 hours doesn't sound so bad.

Apparently, fast travelling increases the number of random dragon spawns. Maybe you could give that a try.

I would rather not fast travel, but thank you.

I think you get a random dragon every in-game week or so.

I played over 130 hours and encountered dozens of dragons. There are far too many once you have begun the main quest.

Go to a location on foot like Morthal. Open your map and fast travel to Morthal. You're still not fast traveling since you're already at that location, and you can still get a chance at getting a fast-travel spawned dragon encounter.

It's a win-win for us non-FT users!

They're relatively rare, for me, and most of the time when they show up, they don't even attack me, they just fly around roaring... and dragonrend doesn't do anything to bring them down.

Seems my characters can't go anywhere without one showing up. It gets really annoying. Rare they are definitely not. I have so many Dragon souls banked its ridiculous.

Maybe it`s a difficulty level thing... Or how how high a level you are.

I dont mind them too much *cough* , although when they appear when your burdend with gear or really bad timing basically, or they attack near a town & kill NPC's that have quests related to them, it cranks up the annoyingness :mage:

Pretty sure it's a fast travel thing. They seem to be more common for people who use fast travel than for people who don't.

i think it has to the with the main quest. in some parts are increased dragons spawns. i finished the mq and my dragon spawnrate decreased a lot and like 3 out of 5 spawns are dragons that just fly around and don't attack.

oh, but i have the feeling dragons appear more often if you run around near mountains + in the nothern part of skyrim.

Just today I was hunting and a blood dragon came out of nowhere and killed me. So i spawned back in Markath and fast travelled to dragons bridge: guess what, a dragon was there. Just yesterday my friend was playing and asked ' when will there be a dragon?' suddenly a dragon flys down. I cant go anywhere without them turning up.

Agree with JazzJR... I'm up around 300 hours, level 44, not rushing it, and I've probably knocked about 60 dragons, and I've had a few dozen fly off on me. If you hunt around outside of towns or villages, or go back and revisit dragon roosts, you will find dragons. Sometimes, you get ambushed and find two dragons...and that isn't fun, when one is baiting you and the other is bombing you. The other possibility is just to walk the roads (take a horse) seeing if you can find them...you can find lots of stuff doing that.

I like mine well done.

And I have usually always had about half a dozen prepared ahead of need without trying.

It seems to depend on the character I play. I have two mages, one about level 40 who seems to have something of a Dragon infestation going on. I think Winterhold gets attacked 2-3 times a day, probably about 20% of the time I leave the Hall of Elements to the telltale swooshing sound. It feels like every journey I undertake has at least 1 Dragon attack in it.

My second mage (about 5 hours of play time thus far) has encountered... 4 Dragons (not counting Mirmulnir and Alduin). I decided I'd go to halted stream camp. Dragon Attack. Then head to Rorikstead. Dragon Attack. Then walk to Winterhold, 2 Dragon Attacks on the road. This guy hasn't been to visit the Greybeards yet. It's really slowing me down, I have to head home to empty my lootbags every time I kill one. On the one hand this guy is already pretty well off, on the other he doesn't get very far away from Whiterun.

My more melee-ish characters have difficulty collecting enough souls to unlock the shouts they find. Not only does it seem that they only get attacked at designated Dragon Lairs but I often have great difficulty getting a Dragon to actually engage me. They often just fly about for a couple of minutes then fly off somewhere else. It doesn't help that I am pretty dire when it comes to hitting moving targets with arrows.

Anyone know the answer to this:

If you don't start the MQ by reporting to the Jarl of Whiterun, are there still dragons (in the wild, or attacking holds) for you to fight?

No.

Spoiler
Not until you kill the first (scripted) dragon near Whiterun.
