Drugs and Perception

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 12:13 am

I distinctly remember Fallout 3 having more to do with drugs than it does now. I think the Australian copies had to have the animations of injecting and so on removed, and that Bethesda just took them out across the board.

I'm kind of wondering if these animations are back, or if they were deep sixed for good with Fallout 3. Being a Mature game anyways, it just seems odd to strike that from the books but keep stuff like cannibalism or profanities. In a game where you can make chunks out of a person's head, no less. I suppose it doesn't matter too much if it's not there, but it would be neat.

:EDIT: Something I forgot to clarify - when I said perception, I meant how the player perceives drug usage.

Actually I'd rather not have them, if every time I use a drug in the game I have to wait for an animation of my character taking it to go over before I can use another one then I'd rather not have them.

Moral Indignation is pretty messed up. It's ok to bloodily kill, dismember and eat someone, but it's a terrible crime beyond the worst of terrible to do drugs, a crime which doesn't even have a victim. That's probably why it's edited.

Regardless, there probably won't be any animations in Vegas either because of this.

Well I think the reason for it is that kids know that it's wrong to murder someone but they see these college films where those young advlts are using drugs and it's "cool" and therefor it's all of the sudden something that kids might want to actually do.

I remember wanting to take E 7 years ago when I was 13 and because I thought it was cool.' (Never did it though and thank Norman for that)
Kids are easily manipulated.

Why the [censored] are they letting college films give out these kinds of messages to kids!?

How ironic that drugs and six are still considered taboo in modern gaming (at least in some countries) while the ability to fire a rocket launcher into a group of innocent civilians is no problem. I think the drug use animations would be great for the immersion factor, assuming they did not add some kind of internal cooldown between taking other drugs, like Mr. Fish said.

I like your point.. I think another big difference is that many people still view games as "for kids."... Even if the game is rated Mature a parent will still buy it for the kid where as if a movie is rated R a parent probably won't. I think a lot of it has to do with parents/older folks.. being less informed about game ratings and game contents. It's like a parent who buys the movie Heavy Metal because it's a cartoon and then gets upset at the makers of the film rather than take the responsibility of blaming themselves for poor decision making.

Whether or not it is a moral crime to see someone inject themselves with a drug (for good reasons or bad) is another point entirely (I see no issue with it myself). But to have animations that come with something you do all the time in the game can be quite tedious. Even the reload animation was trying after a while (and there is a good reason for that).

So, even if it was removed to sate some narrow minded policy maker somewhere, it makes the game better for me.

Besides, we did not see this animation in the earlier Fallouts.

Well, I don't know about this but is it harder to create sprite(or is it critter?) animations or 3d animations?
Don't you have to draw a crapload of sprites for each individual frame of the animation?

I'm not sure how the animations were intended to be implemented. It works well enough using chems from within the PIPboy interface, so I suspect that the animations were taken out as much for the censorship issue as for gameplay reasons.

Let's say you take several chems while within the PIPboy--would it wait until you closed the PIPboy and then play all the animations one after the next? That would get pretty annoying fast. I like how it is just fine. After all, there are no animations for any other consumables like food, drink, Stealthboys, etc.

I see stimpak injection animations in fallout 3 all the time, but they're only used by NPCs. It's better if it stays that way.

People are ignorant, why the hell are they even buying M rated games for their kids? They shouldn't be buying those kind of games for their kids unless the parents don't mind their kids seeing six, drugs, and violence. I personally would love seeing drug using animations (the npcs did smoke after all) but i disagree about their not being a cooldown time. Well of course it shouldn't take forever to use a stimpack, but i do like my games to be more challenging and immersive. At least Oblivion only let you use four potions at a time.

Even though this is off-topic, Australia also wanted the Riot Zombie Cop cut from the Australian L4D2 version. Apparently killing it meant rebelling against the government...

Anyways, I would like to have an optional animation choice. Im sure it would be cool at first, but I would not want to wait for the animation to end to do other things.

I believe he is referring to NPC animations. Sort of like how you see people around the wasteland drinking or eating food.

I personally never found any drugs useful, with addiction and all that.

Do NPC even use drugs?
(Never seen an NPC, except for maybe a companion, use a stimpack)

So it's better if the game get's banned at a lot of places and a lot of stores won't sell it?
I'm sure Bethesda will let Obsidian do another game after that.

personally, im glad that the animations were taken out across the board, because it'd be tedious as hell watching and imagine trying to do it in the middle of combat. breaks the immersion and realism (if that can be said)

I was indeed referring to NPCs having the animations, and not the player. And I wasn't talking about all the time, either - you see NPCs in idle mode drinking whiskey or something, smoking cigarettes, so why not show them shooting up with something? It could just be bundled with the other idle animations so when it plays it only adds to the atmosphere.

And seriously - it's a Mature rated game. 17+. If parents don't want their kids seeing that, they shouldn't buy them an advlt game in the first place. The six I can live without - it's implied, and most of it goes on behind closed doors anyways so it's reasonable to assume it happens, even if it doesn't.

Basically, what I don't get is choosing "accepted evils" over "taboo evils". Cannibalism's okay, but don't you dare pop any pills. Now, finish your supper.

You have no-one to blame but yourself when you choose to indulge in drugs not the media.

Trust me I should know lol

I'd definately say that taking drugs in a post-apocalyptic world to escape reality vs whacking a wee lass with a sledgehammer til she's all over the ground is not quite a difficult choice in terms of moral compass, not for me... What society regards as tabboo however we have little control over at the present.

Then the ESRB or ERSB or whatever comes and proclaim that drugs are the bad part. If that means that we'll just have to settle for an awesome Fallout game with a bloody mess and a bit less obvious drug use, I'm kinda OK with that.

I wouldn't mind if they had the animations; it would add a level of realism.

For the people not wanting to have to deal with continuously watching the injection animation, Obsidian (since we are talking about NV) could have a function where the separate drugs are mixed into one cocktail, and then you inject that.

So, if you wanted to do Psycho and Rad-X, they could be added into the same slot, and then the animation would be of a generic syringe injecting the mixture.

And each different drug could have its own animation, of course (like inhaling Jet, injecting Psycho), if you only wanted to use one.

Besides, Far Cry 2 had "injecting," so I really don't see why it is such a big deal.

one good reason why games portray fire rocket launchers into civilians so easily but not six and drugs is.

six and Drugs are far more acessible, than RPG's, Gernades, Weapons, Vehicles, Tanks, Bombs etc etc to Children and Minors, a Kid coudl only dream (if that be) of running down scores of hapless souls with impunity. that takes learning, six and drugs, 1-2-3 Done, so the game industry do their best to not protray this on our Impressionable little young ones, Older gamers already have their heads screwed on, or off and can't really use "but I was influenced by GTA" excuse because they are assumed to have developed rational, while a child MAY get away with such an excuse.

We dont want to give Children (17 and under) and excuse to do these things now do we? which is why we portay nearly impossible things to acquire in life so readily and easily than we would six and drugs, which is far more obtainable at said ages.

Does that clear up your thoughts, dont think of America/Game industries around the world that censor six and drugs as Hypocrites.

Which shouldn't be a problem, because children shouldn't be playing Fallout: New Vegas at all. So it is a matter of bad parenting, and the ESRB's reaction to the bad parenting, while the game and its advlt consumers have to suffer for it.

But, it isn't that big a deal. Just saying.
