Dumb Question: Why won't my clutter stay still?

Post » Mon Jun 18, 2012 5:10 pm

Alright, so like stated in the title, this is probably a dumb question, but nonetheless I was wondering if anyone had a solution. In the kitchen section of my particular housing mod I have several tables with food/drink related items laid out across them. I have also constructed collision boxes around said tables to prevent the player from knocking the items off of the tables. I have even havok settled all the objects in the Creation Kit, but when I load the house up in game, the items get thrown around as if a Fus Ro Dah causally passed through. Breezehome, Proudspire Manor, and other houses like that don't have this problem, but in my short investigation I didn't see anything different about the way they were placed.

Is this normal? Could the collision boxes be causing the problem (although I don't see how)? I'm just curious as to see whether or not anyone else is experiencing this. Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Without seeing what you have placed and how many objects you have and how close together they are my first guess would be that you have too many objects placed in a very small place that makes them too close to one another. When the cell actually loads in game, they sort of explode, lol. But that is just a blind guess. The same sort of thing would happen with the GECK for the fallout titles as well as the CS for Oblivion.

You might try removing the collision mesh to see what happens though.

Probably the collision boxes that you placed --- they are not designed to have other items with their own collision placed inside of them but to keep items out so are probably throwing the items around on you when the cell loads as you enter it.

Try editing the reference after you havock settle them in the CK. There is a checkbox there called "do not havok settle". In the clutter video tutorial, he uses this setting for a dagger stuck into a piece of armor. See if that helps

I was thinking about checking that "do not havok settle" button, but didn't see it used by any other items Bethesda used in the houses. I'll try reshaping the collision boxes so they don't contain the items, but still prevent the player from knocking the items out. If that doesn't work I'll try the do not havok settle thing. Thank you!

EDIT: Yup, it was the collision boxes. Reshaped them and the problem has gone away. Thank you for the help guys.
