Dunmer exodus to Skyrim

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 4:16 pm

From everything we're given in Skyrim through books and some NPC dialogue, we're lead to believe that the dunmer left Morrowind after Red Mountain's eruption and that the largest portion of dunmer settled in Skyrim. Why is this only really exhibited in one city (Windhelm)?

But I just finished reading a book in the game that says they fled to Skyrim. Is Solstheim a province of Skyrim?

I think one of them said that they came from Morrowind and the first city they came to was Windhelm and they just never bothered to leave.

Solstheim is a small island to the northwest of Vvardenfell with a climate that's even worse than Skyrim. You can explore it in its entirety in the Bloodmoon expansion to Morrowind.

Anyway, your book wasn't wrong. Many Dunmer did flee to Skyrim. But many more fled to Solstheim.

But even then, they're shoved into a little corner of the city with little representation.

Nords claim so... and the Dunmer.

I've just read that only southern Morrowind was lost to Argonians. This would mean that many fled but the rest is still there... fighting maybe.

I wish Bethesda would give us more hints what the hell is going on in the word...

Lore-wise, it is supposed to be a huge ghetto, rather than an alley with a few people in it, right?

Yes. Generally speaking, everything in the ES games since Daggerfall has been represented ten times smaller than it should realistically be. That's why most "cities" are never seem to be anything more than fancy, walled villages.

Nope. The Second Arnesian War is over. Nobody knows exactly who won (although it was probably the Argonians), but southern Morrowind belongs to the Argonians now. Which, IMO, is a good thing, since I'm an argonie fan and it belonged to them in the first place before the Dunmer robbed them of it in the First Arnesian War. :-)

Well I'm a Dunmer fan...

Early Fourth Era - After the eruption of Red Mountain, the Argonians take the opportunity of a weakened Morrowind to invade the region, seeking revenge for thousands of years of slavery. The southern half of Morrowind is ultimately conquered by the Argonians. Since Argonia had already left the Empire, southern Morrowind was then forced to secede. House Telvanni of Morrowind is completely destroyed, the only living heir being Brand-Shei or Brandyl by his true name, who managed to escape to Riften.

The war ended, Argonians won but they only reclaimed their land and took the southern part of Morrowind.

The Cliffracers survived the Red Year and have mass populated since. Driven off of the inhospitable Vvardenfell, they have begun harrassing everyone left alive in Morrowind.

Be careful when quoting the UESP, as it tends to get some facts wrong. We don't definitely know whether the Argonians "won" the war or not, since the war seems to have ended rather abruptly. All we know for sure is that they were fighting, and then they weren't, and at the end of the whole ordeal they had their land back. :-)

It does indeed.
Skyrim itself contests the claim that Brand-Shei is the last Telvanni, as there is an apprentice at the College from the same house.

It does indeed what?

EDIT: Wait, nevermind. I just realized you were referring to the UESP.

The Dunmer have set up government in Solstheim and I doubt they fought the Argonians out of Morrowind since the Argonians probably saw the wasteland that is Morrowind and said errrr, it's not as good as we remembered it..

Only Vvardenfell is a wasteland. The other half of Morrowind that connects to the mainland of Tamriel is still in good condition, and that's the bit that the Argonians got. :-)
