Dynamite for solving problems?

It's implied early in the game that you can use dynamite to blow open a safe.. Does this actually work? Can you use it to get past locked doors perhaps? Just wanted to ask the community before I blow my own legs off :)

Or you could just save in front on the safe...

Oh hell yeah! Screw lockpicking when you have dynamite!

Can someone confirm whether this is true or not?

My intuition tells me this will not work, but I guess I can give it a shot later.

Long fuse dynomite might allow you time enough to run away. Haven't tried to blow a safe yet, will give it a shot next time I come across one though.

Thought:
Spoiler
School house safe where Smiley mentions Pete tried to blow it and couldn't.

I have tried using long fuse dynamite to open a locked door and it did nothing. Don't know about safes.
