Um, Ebony is a Wood, not an Ore

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 9:33 am

Did I miss something in the lore or from earlier games? I just mined my first ebony ore and I was surprised. Ebony is a wood. Not a metal. Shouldn't it be found in forests or something?

In Elder Scrolls, Ebony is a rare volcanic rock.

I was playing Skyrim the other day, and then the strangest thing happened. This is going to sound crazy, but try and stick with me. A dragon, yes, A DRAGON, Attacked. Shouldn't they be... unexistent?

We're allowed a bit of creative licence :) But I know what you mean. I was surprised with how my first set of ebony armor looked when I crafted it.

I've seen those listed as being used as a component for some sets of armor. I can't remember which specifically, but once you start levelling your smithing up and depending on which part of the skill tree you choose to invest your perks you will start noticing uses for them.

This is also true in real life. Though the "more-durable-than-steel" glasses are milky-white instead of bright green, and are used in the manufacture of nuclear warheads... They used to be made as cookingware before companies realized they wouldn't get repeat customers for selling them unbreakable dishes.

Orichalium is a fictional ore that I'm guessing is mostly iron-based, but contains trace minerals for manufacturing a superior, fictional form of steel that is gunmetal grey with a tinge of green. Corundum is a real mineral notable for its high hardness (Being 9.something on Moh's scale)

Nope. Corundum is a real-life mineral, orichalcum is a metal (sort of; it's a bronze alloy)

The problem is, names of materials in TES are terribly messed up. It's best if you just forget reality and focus on the lore, then a rock called ebony will be quite acceptable :)

I suppose whatever sounds cool-at-the-moment. Like malachite :: glass armor, though malachite IRL is nothing like that :>
Then there's the odd fact you could "mine" raw glass, diamond, and ebony in older games
And the odd thing that ebony is "only found", or mostly (?), in Morrowind

Game mechanics are a hoot :>

That would probably cost more than it would to buy the entire province of Skyrim (lore wise).
If you are very wealthy you could afford an ebony statue, or coat your mausoleum with it.
Morrowind had a wonderful ebony statue of a dragon in the city of Ebonheart, but that was probably funded by the Empire.

That's a nice little example of selective memory you've got there. Dragons, magic, demons, gods, other gods, things that pretend to be gods, all that doesn't bother you.

Ebony is also a synonym for black, since the original wood is very dark. So I never had a problem with it considering it's a dark mineral.

Orichalcum is famous mainly because of the Plato writings about Atlantis. Anybody here played Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis? It was a very important item in that game.

It's ORICHALCUM, not Orcanium or Orichalium.

"Orichalcum is a metal mentioned in several ancient writings, most notably the story of Atlantis as recounted in the Critias dialogue, recorded by Plato. According to Critias, orichalcum was considered second only to gold in value, and was found and mined in many parts of Atlantis in ancient times. By the time of Critias, however, it was known only by name."
