Elder Scrolls: Skyrim Perk Reset

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 6:51 am

Hey everyone I would just like to start off and introduce myself by saying this is my very first post ever, and that I had just created this account to make this post specifically because it seems like no one has brought this topic up in detail, at least I haven't seen anything.

This is just a few suggestions on how Bethesda, if they considered, should implement a Perk Reset into Elder Scrolls: Skyrim.

Anyways I know a few or most of you guys are aware that Skyrim for the PC is able to get a perk reset by using a mod, which in my own opinion isn't fair at all and I know some of you will argue that. How ever I'd like to start off by saying that it would be pretty easy for Bethesda to implement a perk reset into Skyrim, and I'd like to use World Of Warcraft (WoW) as an example.

If any of you like myself have ever played WoW you'd know that there are Professions (Perk Trees) like Enchanting, Black Smithing etc. And say if you'd like to unlearn a profession you would be able to. The way WoW copes with unlearning professions is by basically locking out the unlearned profession. So say if I enchanted all my items and then I wanted to switch Enchanting for Black Smithing, I'd still have the enchants but they wouldn't work because I already unlearned the profession.

So basically what I'm trying to say is if Bethesda made it so when ever we unlearned Black Smithing, Enchanting, or Alchemy those enchanted/black smithed item's, and potions wouldn't work.

Thanks.

No. Live with your choices, or make a new character if you want to try something different.

The game is dumbed down enough as an RPG. Letting the player swap/reset perks would just be ridiculous.

You will probably get more people against the idea than those who are for it. I for one don't want it as to me it feels cheap not so much dumb downed, but more so hand holding and just adding another way for the game to pull it's punches (like making nearly everyone essential). For my preference I like having consequences for my choices as it encourages me to find work a work around or to simply start over and go down a different path and make better choices. Hell I restarted my first warrior (2 handed+heavy armor) because I thought I had to take both light and heavy armor perks for smithing to get to dragon and yes it was inconvenient at the time I am also glad I did as I found out I wasted perk choices early on that was holding my character back early on which I would have not really known without having to start from scratch.

Start a new character.
And don't max out every Perk. Play for a while...put one in something you use, and then play for awhile. If you feel you need improvement, add a point. If your doing okay...leave it as is.
Skyrim is not a game where you're meant to max out on everything. No TES game is.
And there are enough Perks Points in this game so you can never really gimp yourself. Just change the skills you use...or, as I said, create a new character.
Took me 6 characters before I got what I want. And I've been playing TES since Arena. I know how this works...and I still can't make up my mind.

And enough with the freekin' WoW.

This isn't WoW, it will never be WoW, it's not like WoW, it's not related to WoW, TES came out before WoW was ever though of, it's a single player game, it's not an mmo, and it's a ROLEPLAYING game...something WoW will never be.

Geez.

You tell us to make a new character so easily, well i think they should implement a perk reset somehow. My first character was going to be 1h/spell, and kinda drifted into archery and sneak, well i didnt know just how important every perk was until i was already level 48, and now im level 70, still hoping they throw it in so my 160+ hours into the game were not a complete waste of time. i may have only wasted about 10 perks, which is why i wasnt concerned at first, but now i see that i need those 10 back for alchemy and further armor/bow skills. You can spend an extra 160 hours making a new character if you want to, however im not that willing.

I only have the one character [maxed @ 81] and figure I have 8 wasted choices. I just used the console to add 8 more perks and now I know better for next time.

I disagree with the idea that Skyrim is "dumbed down." Some people need to step back and realize that Skyrim is a milestone game.

Anyway, the problem with respecing in my opinion is that it would hurt replays and RP. Yes, you may not be optimal if you put a perk here or there that you no longer need later, but I think Skyrim is more about the journey than the destination. WoW is powergaming, constantly revised, and obviously multiplayer so it is a different animal.

Well as i said, it wasnt just one or two, its 10-11, and its effectively screwed my character, not enough perks to do the alch/ench/smith trio for the godly gear.

But everyone has hindsight.

Be that as it may, im not so willing to just throw away 160+ hours ive spent on this character, as i said above, obviously i have started another with a better outlook for his future, but i would still like to optimize my higher if Bethesda would let me.

And OP...stop waiting. It won't happen. Bethesda won't put that in the game.

All their games have been about choices. And in ever game...you're stuck with those choices.

Like it or not.

though you could do everything with one character in oblivion I have done it, but that is besides the point here in this game they made it where you could dabble in everything even raise every skill to it's max, but excelling in only a few areas not in all. I like this way of doing it and yes it would be convenient to just reset perks and choose the ones you want and not feel like you wasted any is nice especially with a high lvl character, but if it was that way I myself in the end would feel cheated so it is just not for me. I am against it though as I feel implementing it even if I did not use it would serve to compromise the intentions of the developers to make the game choice heavy in this area.

This is an impossible condition to check.

Just make the reset cost 150K gold per tree or 20K gold per perk.

That's a bit overkill, but i would still be willing to do it.

Thanks everyone for the replies. :)

Just wanted to say that I found out that the level cap for Skyrim is 80 when I thought it was 50...., so this makes my decision a lot easier. I do understand how that would wreck Skyrim as an RPG if Bethesda implemented a Perk reset, it just svcks for the people who our level 40ish like me and have wasted around 10 perks rofl... Also I didn't mean to compare Skyrim to WoW, I know it's nothing like it, I was just giving you guys an idea on how it works for them.

Thanks again.

Does Dora the Explorer feel dumb to you? Or Teletubbies?

Same goes to the game that was "streamlined" and "made more accessible for a wider auditory". TES was accessible to me back in 1994, I don't want it getting any simpler.

Easy answer, give the console gamers the console...like us PC players have. It can heal all these sorts of ills without the need for anything game changing.
