Enchanting, Alchemy and Restoration.

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 10:33 pm

I was wondering, for a Viking/Warrior type of character (2H swords, heavy armor). Would it be considered wierd for me to use Enchanting, Alchemy and Restoration from a roleplaying PoV?

EDIT: By use, I mean not -only- using, but also prehaps spending a few perks points, at least in alchemy and enchanting.

One way it would make sense is if you were role playing a noble, trained and educated in non combat arts by your father's court mage and other advisors.

And as for Restoration, Nords got a bonus to the skill in Oblivion, so that at least makes sense from a lore perspective.

Hmm. I suppose looking at enchanting as some sort of rune based skill would make sense, yes. As for restoration and alchemy I was thinking one of her parents could have been a priest of some sort, and taught her basics of alchemy and healing.

Reason I was asking btw, is because I wanted to use this perk build http://skyrimcalculator.com/#92278 while also having it "make sense" roleplaying wise.

Or you could think along the lines of http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Wolf_Priest#.T0zLfN1REbw, and fit the concept into TES.

Those wolf soldiers seem more like.. priests than actual warriors though, She's more of a warrior but i'll consider the idea, thanks. :)

And I had a look at higher level restoration spells, which made me realize that unless I plan to spend some points in Magicka there is no point in going for restoration. The higher level spells (adept and better) cost more mana than I will have.

I suppose i'll just get the perks that incease healing, make healing restore stamina, and the novice+apprentice ones then, and make restoration a less important role to her. Just something like a last resort if in trouble kind of thing. I'll just have to decide where she learned to heal then. If I make her a noble as suggested, or just that one of her parents was a priest of sorts.

I'll be going with Enchanting = Runes though, it seems plausible and suitable. And I guess alchemy is something "every" warrior who spends much time in the wilds could learn. at least basic potions. (Was only planning on making healing, stamina and fortify carry weight/smithing anyhow)

First, I would point out there are no Vikings in Nirn. There are Nords, which have a lot of superficial similarities, but have their own peculiarities in TES Lore. On the one hand, the Lore indicates the Nords don't have much love for magic. On the other hand, there's nothing saying that there aren't any Nord magic users, and in fact, IIRC, all of the games have included Nord mages, so they aren't unheard of.

Still, even if you are focused more on a warrior, the Nords don't seem to have anything against potions, as far as I've seen - there's alchemists in every Hold. As for Restoration, they don't seem to have anything againsts Priests or their use of Restoration. Nords would probably tend to have disdain for enchanting, I suspect, but that doesn't mean no Nords ever do enchanting. Still, I'd say from an RP standpoint, probably alchemy is the easiest to justify, followed by Restoration, followed by enchanting.
