I encountered Alduin in the Wilderness

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 2:18 pm

Probably someone else have seen this too but I was quite amazed because I had never heard about it before I saw it. Alduin was there above a Dragon mound and was raising a dragon from it just like he did during the quest at the Kynesgrove but this time it was in the wilderness without a quest. The one who was raised from his grave was Vuljotnaak.

He does that, he will go around raising dragons and you can find him at times (i usually spot him west of whiterun)

It is a nice feature to see your nemesis actually taking part in the world instead of waiting in a corner for you to find him.

Yeah thats by design. Had it myself, since I didnt rush the MQ and just pootled around while the dragons were active. Was pretty cool to see the resurrections outside the quest.

Yep, there's a mound up the hill from Rorikstead, there's another near the crossroads to the west of Fort Greymoor, there's also one very near the road leading west from Windhelm, up past Anga's (?) mill. In fact I'm very nervous about the last one because usually by this time in my game he's already shown up there and done his schtick but that mound is untouched. I'm living primarily in Windhelm so I'm on that road quite a bit and I get the willies every time I go by there, expecting him to show up.

There's also one in Eastmarch, south of Windhelm, I've seen Alduin raising a dragon there as well. That might have been the first time I ever saw it happen. Not the one in Kynesgrove, further south than that.

He does that.
Its a random encounter but depends a lot on timing...specifically where you are in the main quest and if you just happen to show up at the right mound at the right time.

Nice feature, but I have never seen it myself. Does Alduin react to the player in any way?

No, he doesn't. Except from when you go with Delphine, where he talks with the dragon he just raised, then turns to you and says "You call yourself, Dovahkiin, but you have no idea what we're talking about"

Yep, I've found him doing that too. Although it was just the once. I hid behind a rock.

If provoked enough he will shout unrelenting force to you - that's always possible with him (and in the start of game at the Helgen he may even bite and burn you and kill you with purpose if you try to leave the city via citygates).

He does that from time to time, it's a random event, but one that also has a seemingly permanente launch point in Rorikstead (oh God, the spelling!). One time i tried to use the console to kill Alduin thinking I could save the world a lot of grief..nothing happened...D:

Yeah, it is very cool when that happens... it's like this big storm suddenly brews up and there he is. I don't know if that means he's done a shout to call the stormclouds down or what. But when you're in the middle of a fairly calm sunshiney day and then all of a sudden... it's quite unnerving.

Alduin is a darn coward; during his "raising of dragons", when i ran towards the dragon mound, he just flew away instead of completing the ritual. :meh: So much for the "world eater".

I don't know, if he knows you're the Dovahkiin, why would he go to all the trouble of resurrecting a dragon when the one person who can render it permanently and totally dead is right there?

Better for him to come back and finish the job later when you're not around.

Still doesn't explain why he doesn't just attack you then and there, maybe he's waiting until he's got all his dragon peeps up and running so he can kill you while they're around to take note of it. It would reaffirm his power and position, killing the one who was supposedly sent by Akatosh for the sole purpose of defeating him. I mean, it's obviously a big deal when it turns out the other way instead, even just fighting him to a stalemate the first time makes his second-in-command question his authority and consider switching sides.

Simplest explanation is: supervillains are arrogant, and their arrogance makes them stupid.

 That's interesting. It adds more mystery to the question: "Did we really kill him in that_place? which has been discussed in previous threads. :o
