Epic? Bethesda dont do epic! (Spoilers)

Post » Fri Jun 01, 2012 5:54 pm

Yes we all know and love Bethesda for making huge sandboxes for us to play in however when it comes to creating epic scenes they leave a lot to be desired with most of what should have been an epic moments looking like something out of a badly rehearsed play.

For instance here is how an epic execution scene should look

And here is how a "Bethesda epic execution scene" looks (warning spoilers pertaining to the start of Skyrim )

Now here is how epic battle scenes should look

Now here is a "Bethesda epic battle scene"

Use words to express your opinions instead of lazily linking youtube videos. I don't want to sit here and watch all of them to try to figure out your point.

Yeah well it has been made clear to me in my other thread that most people on these forums clearly lack the ability to read so I thought I might try a different approach.

So you're saying that rather than being a breathing part of a realistically realized scene, it should all be done in over-the-top CG cinematic?

I disagree.

There's only so much stuff they can put into a game because of whatever engine they use. We're not at the level of LOTR yet where we can have ultra-realistic and epic battle scenes.

I don't think the execution at the beginning was meant to be really epic. If it was like that movie, it would be a bit overdone; we only met that guy like five minutes ago.

Eh in a sense, really what I want is what is supposed to be an epic battle to actually feel like an epic battle rather than a small skirmish or a schoolyard brawl.

Ah but you can create the illusion of an epic battle scene, I realise that you can only render so many characters at a time however you can create the illusion that the battle is far bigger than just the area you are fighting in just like you can create the illusion of a world that is far bigger than just the playable area.

I'm not even going to bother, beyond saying that if you hate the game so much, go play something else and stop bugging the rest of us with your pointless inanities.

Where did I say I hate the game? But forgive me for bringing up discussions on how new installments of the Elder Scrolls games can increase their potential, it is really sad how closed minded the average Elder Scrolls fan is.

The stormside of the battle for whiterun was pretty epic considering the game and what it's capable of. The imperial side of the same mission was weak. Big battles isn't what I was expecting so I'm impressed when they pull it off and not bothered when it falls a bit flat.

What I was expecting was EPIC battles with dragons and the game has delivered. Yesterday I was fighting an Elder Dragon guarding a word wall, with the [censored] music rocking, me having to dive behind cover every time he did a breath attack and the fact he could one shot me if I let him get close made that [censored] [censored] epic! After he was slain I felt accomplished and approached the word wall for my reward, then that [censored] Krosis popped out of his coffin, scared the [censored] out of me and sent me diving back behind cover with a fireball.

Yeah Skyrim is pretty [censored] epic! You're just looking in the wrong place.

Oh gosh of course.

Is there any chance (at all) that that scene from Braveheart reenacted First Person would have even a fragment of the emotional impact or interest that the film achieved?

Spoiler
Witcher 1 had a fantastic opening intro, and I was really looking forward to them topping it in Witcher 2... and all they did was some lame in-engine amnesia scene that was ruined by framerate issues due to the first run settings being set a bit too high.
I certainly understand using engine animations that can adjust to the PC's current appearance, but I've never seen it done better than can be pre-rendered... Pre-rendering can easily outclass an engine for pure visual quality and effects, but also has none ~(none!) of the engine limitations.

If given the choice between in-game FPP or even TPP vs a production quality pre-rendered cinematic, I will always pick the video, hands down.

I dunno about you guys but I would probably be a little pissed if I had to sit through 2.5 hours of watching a character's back story before I saw him get "epicly executed." Especially because that happens right at the beginning of the game, so making me wait 2.5 hours so I care about a character you kill in front of me would be a bit excessive when I just want to play a damned game.

Aside from that, do you have any idea how much that would kill console hardware if you had huge battles like you suggest?

Not only on console. The fewest people here have a PC which could handle 2000 NPC at one spot. Also the clear view would be lost.

Skyrim is designed so it will run on consoles with their limitations and (reasonably) low end PCs, this made the game more available to people rather that just catering to a minority with Alien Ware PCs. To make it as epic as you seem to be suggesting will render the game unplayable for most people, that is just the way it is.

I stopped reading after the OP called me and everyone else reading this thread, and I quote, "dumb bastards".

Pretty sure name calling is against forum rules. Now, go away.

Wish I could report from my mobile.
