Evacuate, there be a dragon lair nearby.

Post » Sat Jun 02, 2012 5:27 pm

So a few days agoI was playing with my third and current character, a High Elf mage. Not important.

Anyway, I was wondering near..... Markarth, I think? Maybe not. But, after escaping Helgen I wandered around the area, back to Helgen, jumped past the main gate you come though in the opening cinematic, and wandered some more.

I came across a small shanty-ish hut/house. There was nothing inside but a letter, "To the Authorities". The letter read that there had been a dragon flying overheard for a few days, and the residents of the abandoned shack thought it had a lair nearby, some mountain lair or something.

Has anyone else run into this and checked out the mountain? I accidentally dropped the letter and didn't notice until later.

That's what I figured. But man, what an awesome way to tell you about a Word Wall. That was a great idea by Bethesda. This is my first real RPG(played FF as a kid, hate it now), and it's blowing me away. Stumble across a small shack, BAM - a freaking shanty shack has its own story. Shack --> residents abandon because of dragon --> follow clues to Word Wall --> Dragon/Word Wall.

EPIC.

There is a lot of nice little tidbits and lore scattered all over skyrim, i admit im usually in too much of a rush to slow down and read that curious looking note or journal.

Just wait until you find the house out in the wild with the note hinting about a secret door. Then winding up in a 45 minute dungeon crawl under the house, compete with more notes, letters, overheard conversations detailing a whole new story.

Awesome! I love finding little shacks like that. My Imperial toon adopted a dog named Meeko, also found in an abandoned shack with his dead master on the bed. awwww
I'm also on my 3rd play through, but I don't recall that shack you mentioned! There are still a lot of things I need to explore. This game will keep me busy for ages haha

If your referring to the so called person being a "woodcutter" then, yes I know which place your referring too-part of a quest.

If not, then I have never ran into this place.

If its the place I am thinking...........

You can access the place before even getting the quest. The mold will be in the loot pile and you can take it or leave it.

Cool! Thank-you. I'm going to check that place out. Haven't done that questline yet so I won't touch the mold.

Pretty sure that's they place. I never got a quest for it or anything, just broke in to the house on a whim and started investigating after I was attacked. Reading a note caught my attention and I found a lot of interesting stuff there.

Considering it's part if a quest I have to say it would probably svck balls as a quest. Most of the excitement was the mystery of they place I had found with a secret door and trying to figure it what it was about by reading scraps of paper and eavesdropping. Having a quest marker telling you exactly where to go and what to do would have ruined it.

Oh Pinewatch! The cool thing is, the treasure room stuff respawns after a while. I went in there with my new character, after escaping Helgen and exploring a bit. I think I was lvl 5 or so. I cleaned out the treasure room and then went back several levels later. Everything had reset by then (bandits, secret door) Not sure if that was a glitch. I need to go back again and see LOL

I don't think I ever got a quest for that place.

The residents didn't abandon it. If I recall correctly, there's a couple of burnt corpses next to the shack...

I was going to post this.

You're correct, they were burned to death by the dragon.

Doesn't the compass give away the exact position of the nearby dragon wall, anyway? -.-

I guess I didn't notice that. I figured they had just buggered off.

Do we know where this "abandoned" shack might be? East or West of Helgen? I'd be very interested in checking this out myself tonight.

Southwest. It's on the way to Falkreath near the mountains. It's a sad place since they were killed.

Yeah, I've been through Helgen at least twice now since the initial escape and I do not ever recall a shack with a note, nor a word wall. I may have already discovered the wall though, but it'd be nice to find the note. I keep all the notes and journals I find, even if I have doubles.

Yeah, this sort of stuff makes the world much more interesting to explore. There are also smaller places in that vein, like the shack where the owner was killed by a bear. My favorite is definitely Frostflow Lighthouse. The whole thing was fantastically done.

Yeah Frostflow Lighthouse is cool. Quite sad, but it made me feel like I'd put a stop to something
