Is it even practical to make a pure Mage that's not an Altme

Post » Fri Jun 22, 2012 4:45 pm

I've played a Warrior to level 50, and an Assassin to 43, and I want to make a Mage, but Altmer look so sick and stupid. I don't want to be an elf, yet they seem to be the only choice bc of how gimp destro is, you NEED highborne and the extra mana.

Is playing a non-Altmer Mage even practical, or am i going to have to stick to Novice the whole time if I pick a different race?

I played an Argonian who specialized in fire magic, alchemy, alteration, and restoration and did just fine. Alchemy is technically in the stealth category, but I still feel this character was a pure mage.

Part of my theme was magic regen, I had a number of items that increased my magica regeneration, as well as the apprentice brithsign. Since I didn't do anything with enchanting I couldn't make custom items but there are still plenty of good ones in the game.

I played a Nord Pure Mage and did just fine. Be ready to invest perks that decrease the cost of spells as well as reduce the time magicka takes to recharge/

I would think that Bretons and Dunmer would make fine pure mages.

Bretons work fine. And you can enchant clothing down to 0 cost for two magic schools if you have the dual enchanting perk.

I might be a bit off with this, but you (or someone else) might wanna try Orc with light armor and you can use the berserk ability to boost your defence? Then just boost Magicka and pick the spell perks. I propably missed the point totally. Yes, I did.

Anyone can be a good mage.

Most people select Breton because of the automatic 25% resistance to magic. However, it's all pointless. See, mages have perfect synergy as necromage vampries. As a plus to a Necromage vampire, the perk Atronach and the stone Atronach make for 100% spell reduction. At this point, Breton's racial becomes useless.

As for destruction? Any mage struggles unless they go for 100% cost reduction.

Exactly.

Choose a race that you like above others (I always go Breton) and go at it.

I do not use 100% reduction it makes everything boring. 80% is enough for me. Also I prefer the lord stone.

Maybe it's boring, but I prefer not having to worry about that little blue bar running out at the wrong time!

Or just being a stage 4 vamp and laughing at Ancient Dragons' fire breath.

It goes something like:

Ancient Dragon: YOL TOOR SHUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUL

My Mage: LOL

One more question, I play on master diff and I wreck everything easily, yet I get literally 2 shot by a mages lightning spell, it is a bolt of some sort and makes a thunderous sound, what's it called? It's wicked.

I don't have that problem either. I put all my points into magicka and reduce destruction down to 80%. And one other school the rest I have enough to cast for when I need them.

Skyrim makes it extremely easy for any race to be good at being a warrior/sneak/mage. Getting Skyforge weapons early from the companions makes it very easy for warriors. The armor sets from TG and especially from DB make it easy to sneak without investing heavily in the sneak tree. The college of winterhold quest rewards can let any race be a decent mage if they arent speccing to wear armor over robes.

I guess Dunmer is a good choice if you want to try vampirism along the way (but they are buuuuuuuuuutt ugly). I would go with Altmer or Orc. You know why? Because they're my favorite races. Conclusion of my post? Choose the race you feel like playing:) Everyone can be a good mage.

The thing you need to know is that enemy NPC's destruction spells scale like weapon damage does. PC spells do not.

Lol, yeah working on that for my vampire assassin

I don't have that problem either. I put all my points into magicka and reduce destruction down to 80%. And one other school the rest I have enough to cast for when I need them.

And that's the beauty of TES, to each his own. Anyway, on topic, any race can be anything. Bretons and Altmer just have a higher predisposition to mages than say, a Kahjit.
