Everything about Dawnguard was great except...

Post » Tue Nov 20, 2012 10:32 am

..the price. I'll admit, when i first started Dawnguard i wasn't too interested because they kind of set you off on quests that are literally scattered across Skyrim. I felt like I was just fetching things for whichever faction I played in. However, as I continued to play on through the story I was actually shocked and impressed with what I saw. The new landscapes were beautiful, there are some cool new armor sets you can wear (though I wish there were more), loved the new shouts and spells, and the addition of dark dungeons. Also Serana is by far the most well thought out and interesting follower in Skyrim. I wish more companions could have been created like her. She was just unique, unlike most of the generic followers you get in Skyrim.

For the first time i felt svcked into a story being told in this game. It was pretty great. The only downfalls I can see are the additional bugs the DLC brings and the price tag of $20. The job Bethesda did on Dawnguard gives me hope that when we get an actual expansion its going to be worthwhile. I feel like some of the things in the vanilla Skyrim were just rushed, but after playing Dawnguard it gives me hope that Bethesda can and will make some cool new interesting stories.

What are your opinions?

I'll have to admit, $20 does seem like a lot for something that can't be compared to Shivering Isles, but comparing Dawnguard to most $10 DLC today, the $20 is definitely a reasonable enough price.

and basicly all should have been included in the original version and from what i read some of the mods that came out for skyrim are actually better than what is in DG

I had no issues with it, considering it cost the same as KotN and was twice as big.

With regards to SI, that was twice the price of DG when it launched.

I think it was priced fine.

20 bucks is pretty cheap for the sheer quality and quantity of the content. I even consider the length of the content to be much longer than shivering isles, because it adds several elements that drastically alter gameplay, making the old content feel fresh again.

I think we all look for something new in our games, regardless of the price. I really like Serana, and will complete Dawnguard first on my next character creation just so I can have Serana with me on vanilla Skyrim, I think she brings something new to the game.

Overall I thought the DLC was great, and I can live with the bugs until a patch comes out.

I would pay 20 for SI ported to Skyrim, but I think it's a lil' pricey for DLC

Compared to the Kingdom of Amalur DLCs... nor.
Even compared to the story Dragon Age 2 DLCs.. not.

Dawnguard is for me definetly not a twenty dollar dlc. And at Europe it costs 20 Euro, and for my Skyrim PC Version I paid a bit over 40 Euro...
So I think in my case it's absolutely not a reasonable price, in no way.

I'd rather pay 20 bucks for Dawnguard than 10 bucks for a set of "new" (different colors) clothes for Street Fighter 4 characters IMHO

Dawnguard has given me about 70 hours of entertainment already. Well worth the 20 bucks IMO.

That's because you have no concept what a reasonable price should be.

I thought the price was reasonable. I've gotten more than 40 hours out of DG so far and I haven't even done every side quest yet.

I agree, althought the quality is up for debate. A lot of bugs are coming to light, some of them that are game wrecking. The DLC is good though, I would honestly say it is my favorite DLC that Bethesda has ever made (including major ones like Shivering Isles). The DLC had a great story and that is what sold it for me. If they want to continue to make good dlc, they need to sell us on the story first, because the gameplay doesn't really have a lot of ways to expand. I also agree with those saying that the DLC probably should have had some more extra stuff, like weapons, armors, etc. For how little real estate they added in this expansion, it wouldn't have hurt to add more unique items, but that is a small complaint, as the stuff put in is pretty decent.

Aye, one of the new locations had hands down one of the most atmospheric sections I've seen in a game. I was almost sorry to finish it...

Its a bit pricey for sure but
Spoiler
the forgotten vale, vampire lord form, the aetherium crown, Arvak, and the new vampire armor was definitely worth it lol
I will say that I wish I didn't have to pay for dragonbone weapons and arrow crafting.

I got bills to pay in real life. 20 bucks was (realistically) about 5 to 8 bucks too much. Yeah, it added another layer to the game, but a thin layer at best- MQ was easy/quick enough but it's the minor add-ons that made the game great. New weaponry, random encounters, new armors and a few new locations were awesome... but there could have been a bit more of it all to make it 20 bucks. I mean, the free update that included mounted combat was probably more game changing than some of the DLC.

After having played through it several times now, I think the price is justified. There's a LOT of content, though I think that some people may not immediately realize it.

Then again, I'm of the mind that things are changing and $20 is the new $10. Cheaper DLC will give us less than we expected from it, while more expensive DLC will give us what we used to expect from the cheaper stuff. That's how it goes. Don't bother whining or shaking your fist at the sky.

For me the content itself was worth $20, I have only done one playthrough at about 15hours. Alot of games that cost full retail barely provide 15 hours of game play. A great example that comes to mind is the Force Unleashed II. Finished it in 6 hours and there was no replay value. Sure glad I rented that one.

Aside from the content, what really makes DG worth it is the addition of gameplay mechanics that benefit the entire game as a whole. VL and WW perk trees, new shouts, summon a mount (love this one) and my favorite, the addition of crossbows. I never found much benefit to playing as a vampire or werewolf till now. SI was great as far as new area and content, but didnt offer much that integrated or enhanced the vanilla gameplay at all. Just added some new weapons and armor, which for me personally I didn't like and never used.

Might be slightly off topic, but do the crossbows get added to the levelled list in game? E.g. do bandits spawn with them occasionally? Can't find anything about it. Maybe there is a reason explained in game as to why the Dawnguard are the only ones who have the crossbows, but it would make sense that they would be used more widely. They were in Morrowind too if I remember correctly.
