Everything is a threat... Except the combat...

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 8:05 am

I've been playing this game a while now. I've noticed that combat is not a threat but EVERYTHING ELSE is.

I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing.

I just find myself worrying about traps, kettles, baskets, gravity more than actual combat vs mobs.

Is there a way to say "threat" and mean "good?"

i have to admit I seem to have the same problem i know this isn't dark souls but scaling is so random at times it's confusing for example I went Into a dungeon on master and one hit everything I went into another dungeon and had to turn the difficulty to adept not because I was getting hurt but because it was taking too long to kill and got tedious

Use light armour, no more than 250, and weps no more than 60 damage. You'll get pwned on Master.

Traps don't do much damage and can usually be avoided pretty easy, the super sprint shout is nice for the swinging axe traps who is the only one who can not be avoided and can kill you if you stand still.
Flying objects do 5-10 hp damage? it's much easier going down an cliff than in Oblivion where hillsides was an common cause of death.

At the same time, we has enemies who can kill you in a couple of seconds. No the game is not very hard, however I find it more dangerous than Oblivion where hard enemies just took long time to kill and standard Fallout 3 where it was easy to identify the dangerous enemies, in skyrim you can not easy se difference between normal forsworn and the briarhearts, or the normal draugr and the deathlords so you has to take all serious.

If you find combat isn't challenging enough play on master... As for traps, they are supposed to be a threat but I only find some specific ones are actually dangerous, Dwemer traps and Swinging Log traps for example...

If you find gravity to be your biggest enemy you should probably stop jumping off of mountains and cliffs... I jest of course but that's the only place I can think of that gravity can be a true problem (I don't personally have a problem with it though as I run down mountainsides all the time and don't seem to die from it)...

As for kettles and baskets, I don't see how these are a problem unless you are getting caught while sneaking from hitting them, at which point you need to pay a bit more attention to your surroundings...

Basicly, i'm scared off everything most off the time

In the wild i'm always on the lookout for bears, wolf packs, bandit camps, dragons in the sky, skeevers, and the list can go on and on.
When i'm entering a cave, dungeon, burial site or whatever you call those dangerous places, i'm almost all the time sneaking around. Is that a skeleton? Yes, it is! Is it 'alive'? Hmmm, not sure. Better shoot an arrow to be sure. *Plop* Pffft, that one was dead allready. Who else is in this area???
This is my playstyle for most off the game

So i can understand that you are scared off traps and stuff, but hey, you don't fear fighting, i'm just a coward that wants to make a fortune without getting killed

PS to all that start laughing, just try to imagine that you are really doing these things for REAL and that dead is just around the corner, i bet you would be scared too!

Traps? Lol. Most of them won't even hit you when activated and those that do don't take much off the health bar.

It's a thing I always found weird in RPGs, traps are usually pointless as they rarely are lethal and the "HP" you lose is easily replenished or even regenerates. The only times they make sense is when they are placed where battles are being fought.

Haha if I was playing my game of Skyrim in real life we'd all be screwed. I'd rather kill people for the Dark Brotherhood or steal for the Thieves' Guild than do the main quests :P

Sometimes combat is a threat. When there are many enemies, some mages or archers. One arrow and I'm dead, is this not a threat? Never died from falling. Lost two horses from stone traps on the highways. Traps in dungeons are a real threat too, but only because I use a "deadly traps" mod. Otherwise they were just an annoyance.

My HundredHitPointWonderMage gets one-shotted by the swinging spike-wall traps, and as I generally like to bring Lydia along with me this can happen quite a bit. And I only play on Adept.

And the soul gem shooty blowy-uppy fireball traps are the bane of my life in the early game. Last time I encountered one I didn't have a strong enough ward to take the hits, or enough hitpoints to make the run, or a nice explosion spell to cast. I ended up having to use a scroll of Fireball to knock them away.

I usually order Lydia to move pass those traps first, or run far ahead.

Yes it is somewhat silly Fus Roh Dah does not work well on these. They are easy with ethereal tho.

Yeah one of those gem things scared the crap outta me last night, I'm on master with one hundred health, if not for my flesh spell and +50% magic resistance that thing would have wiped me out.

If everything is a one hit kill or a struggle then the game gets weary very quickly. Random scaling is totally the way to go in my opinion. It keeps you on your toes as you never know what to expect next.

You obviously haven't run into the swinging log traps then... Those things hit HARD... Traps however are much fun when you lure the enemy through them and watch him get hit by them instead...
