Exam in 8 hours, unsure of what course of action to take

Post » Fri Dec 09, 2011 4:50 pm

So I have my final econ exam at 9:00 AM (it's not 1 AM where I am). I'm nearly locked in at a B for the class, and so long as I get over a D on the exam, I'll keep my grade. The good thing is my friends have taken the class before and I've been studying for it off previous tests, so I know all the answers pretty well.

The big concern is I had another exam earlier today which I pulled an all-nighter studying for. So I didn't sleep at all last night, went to class today and had things to do all day and now I'm hardly tired for some odd reason.

I can force myself to go to sleep and get ~7 hours of sleep, but for anyone who's pulled all-nighters before, you wake up from finally sleeping incredibly drowsy, which is a feeling I don't want to have while taking an exam. I can try and force myself to stay up until 9, take the exam and get back to my apartment and sleep the whole day (the test is my only class tomorrow), or I can try and take a few hours to nap and get some shut-eye without committing to sleep.

I'm not as worried about the contents of the exam as I am being in the right state of mind to take it, or god forbid, making sure I don't sleep through it. Just curious what any other college students with incredibly off sleeping schedules would do.

> Call in a bomb threat to the Uni
> Exam delayed for the day
> Sleep until the next day
> Wake up recharged and ready to go

What could possibly go wrong? :spotted owl:

I say sleep, get off the forums and go to bed.

You could always try a power nap to clear your head. :)

I have my physics final in 57 minutes by the way. (It's 7:08AM in Iceland) Don't ask me what the hell I'm doing browsing the forums at this time :P

While this sounds like the most 'normal/sane' course of action, think about the negatives.

At this point, being up 36+ hours, sleeping for 7 hours will make me wake feeling drowsy. There's also the concern that I could sleep through my alarm and miss the exam, seeing as I'd be in a crazy deep sleep.

The science of it is all turned around when it comes to college.

It's like checking your email -- you just do it instinctively in the morning and it's a bad habit to break

Just chase a shot of 5 Hour Energy with Redbull about 30 minutes before your test. You'll stay awake and focused, though I doubt your prof would be able to read your handwriting.

Or, if your roommate is awesome, have him monitor a 15-20 minute power nap a little before the test. That'll get your body some rest but not enter the deep sleep. I've done it when I had to work the next day (pull an all nighter, go to bed at 6:45, alarm goes off a little after 7, shower, I feel good) so that + energy drink + good breakfast = awake.

I did the exact same thing as you, exam at 9:30 this morning, I stayed up til around 4:30am. I went to bed though, felt refreshed when I woke up, studied a bit, and went off to the exam. I actually think I did pretty good, which is good for a class I haven't been to a single time since the last exam.

This is way too late for the original poster, but my general advice in situations like this is to sleep, wake up ~1 hr before you need to, then consume some sort of stimulant (tea is my fave) and follow it up with some exercise and a shower. Get the sleep, kill the drowsy.

Ah, college. Just one year ago, I was partaking of your sweet, sweet simplicity.

I was lucky one year ago- I had two classes that the lowest exam grade got dropped from. I had a 4.0 (equivalent of an A) in secured in both of those classes with the final exam still to come. Both those professors had said "if you have a 4.0 before the last exam, for the love of God, why the hell would you bother showing up?" So I didn't!
