Excessively Long Loading Screen

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 9:35 pm

My game has a lot of trouble on the loading screen. I'm told by many that their loading screen is so quick they can't read the tips. When I fast travel I can fully read anywhere between 1 and 5 tips, which is a little excessive. Even worse sometimes the loading screen just hangs. I've seen it hang for 15m before killing it. Specifically there are two door transitions where it almost always crashes. They're both in Whiterun (primarily this is as far as I've gotten, so I suspect there are other doors that would make it hang as well). The first is leaving Dragonsreach to enter Whiterun through the main hall. Out of the many times I've tried, I've successfully loaded once or twice (and these were in reasonable amounts of time.) I generally have to take the balcony exit (which works fine) and fast travel (which usually works). The second is Jorrvaskr. I hae to use the back entrance. This building is worse and hangs way more often. There's a certain door (If it matters which door, it's one of the back doors. Specifically the door on the right as you leave Jorrvaskr) that works more often than the others. It'll load for 5s or so and then the music track will change abruptly and the game will actually load. If anyone has any insight please share it with me. I've seen other people post similar problems on other forums with no answers so I thought I'd try my luck here. If you have any more questions please don't hesitate.

tl;dr : Skyrim gets stuck on the loading screen for too long. It stays there forever when I use two specific doors.

I am having this same issue.

I fixed my 5-7 sec video lag issue with the ENB series patch, and everything was working swimmingly, even on my older hardware, then about two days ago, bam, 15-30 sec load screens became 3-5 min load screens. I dread having to zone out or fast travel anywhere now as I seem to spend a majority of my time reading that quote from the dark brotherhood rather than playing.

Things I have tried:

-removing old save games (nope)

-updating my video drivers (didn't work)

-verifying game cache on steam (no dice)

-defragging my game files on steam (negative)

-defragging the system drive (no help)

What on earth happened? The game was working great, and now...

This happens to me at Jorvasskr and Dragonsreach, but no where else.

Yeah, I have been getting tons of problems with the new patch (PS [censored] you bethesda :P Yes, I said it...Had everything running great till that patch went live for NO REASON).

Long loading times (Before I couldn't read even 1 tip as you guys stated).
Purple textures sometimes, mostly before I crash.
And yes, random CTD.. More than ever.

+ Wasted time reinstalling Skyrim :P

So far this has been fixed with the latest patch. Thank you Bethesda.

Edit: Nevermind, it worked once and now all the same instance transfers (certain doors and cave entrances) are broken and wont load.

I observed a problem with impossibly long loading times, when I installed Skyrim on my parents' computer. Their computer isn't that much worse than mine, so I was puzzled.

As it turned out, the loading times were cause by their demented antivirus software - specifically the "on access" checker. Apparently it kept scanning every single file that Skyrim accessed, every time - which would mean several gigabytes, every time a new location or a save was loaded.

This just to remind people that it isn't always the game's fault, when things go wrong. The environment in which it is run is rarely a "clean room", and some programs just don't play nice with others.

except a lot us use this clean install test pretty early on and found that even a completly fresh and uaginal install has the same problems.

I think I see why things aren't working out so well for you, this is meant to be installed on a PC not that. ;)

Excessive loading time? Get faster a disk and or memory and or CPU to do the heavy lifting between the two, its pretty simple.

Are you kidding me!? You don't know what you're talking about.
I don't think improving from my 7200 RPM and 3.2 GHz quad core will fix the problem. I've literally left my computer running for 30m to see if it would actually load. And it hasn't. It should not take this long to load on my hardware. This is a problem. Disabling anti-virus doesn't fix it for me.

When I watch Giskard's he-who-shall-not-be-named's videos (on YouTube) I'm always struck by how long his rig takes to go through a doorway!
Leaving any building, it takes a good ~10 seconds to reappear outside the door.
Doesn't sound like long - but seems to take forever (when you're sitting, watching).
Thank goodness my rig is almost instant.

It's all about your storage - your harddisks, plus motherboard/memory/CPU. Your overall memory bandwidth, plus the speed of your pagefile and its physical location.
You require a very clean, tight environment to play in.
No AntiVirus or instant messengers, updaters, players or utilities running, thanks.
I have a big fast 32MB-cache harddisk for Windows; another one for Steam; and a third one for PageFile (swapfile).
I go through all doorways 'instantly' (and I have only 3GB system RAM).
So Specs are only the tip of the iceburg...
You can have two rigs with apparently the same specs (but vast, enormous differences in overall performance).

Anyway (bottom line) your rig's not up to the job.
For whatever reason...
Up to you to figure out why; we can only recommend.
But it's not the game - the game is fine. (It's very demanding though.)

Ugrids=7 or more (9,11,13) causes infinite loading screens with HD texture mods and HD DLC for me. Set your Ugrids to 5 if you have this problem. I have an HD5850 1GB DDR5 GPU.
