Facial generation in New Vegas

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 12:42 am

A quick question I haven't had any luck answering myself; has there been any information or screenshots released in regards to customising the face of The Courier in New Vegas? I ask because there's a face I made in Fallout 3 I'd like to preserve in New Vegas (yes, I know, Courier != LW - I just like the face). It's been confirmed for a long time that they'll be no kind of 'import' facility whatsoever, so my plan is to screenshot the positions of every feature slider from Fallout 3 then replicate them in New Vegas in order to generate the same facial features.

However, this plan hinges on the assumption that the features and sliders in New Vegas are absolutely identical to the facial generation 'Gene Projector' in Fallout 3. Barring the release of a third party mod or utility, or simply winging it and doing it by eye, this is the only way I can think of accomplishing this goal. So, has anyone seen any articles that discuss the character creation process or seen any screenshots of facial generation in action to confirm/deny that it will be identical to Fallout 3?

Oh, and a rider question - we all know New Vegas occurs 4 years after Fallout 3, but do we know the exact date that the game picks up (e.g., in Fallout 3 you leave Vault 101 on August 17th, 2277)?

Thanks for any answers.

erm dunno. find some way of exporting the facegen model out of it, then hoping the mesh is the same, and importing it into your NV model? Would need new FO3edit (or FVNedit) and the new Geck for that I would have thought.

Here are two ways to do this from an earlier thread on this:

Since a geck or something like it is shipping with the game the first thing im going to do is get my face in the game just like i did in Fallout 3 or Oblivion for that matter. The process IS more time consuming then it was for Oblivion but its essentially the same. I used to have a walk-through on the oblivion boards but its long since expired.

Here are the steps basically;

Full version of Facegen
Picture of your face
Photofit your face in facegen
Export the textures from Facegen
Edit them in some paint program that supports dds files to fit the face template for your new race
Clone a race in geck
save the esp and load it up
Use facegen to fallout converter on a saved game
change your race in the game
bingo your done

There is an easier way, probably.

Look over at Fallout Nexus and see if someone made a mod that gives numerical values for the face gen. I know this exists for Oblivion and it uses the same face gen program. You can pull yours up with the Edit Race command in the console (check the wiki for the syntax) and see those values. I am sure this mod, if it exists, will be up soon after release. Then you can use those values to create the face in the new game.

Well I play 360 so I dont really know much on the import / export options but it seems you can do it from eye if you really need to.

I play on PS3, and I found it pretty difficult to reproduce something even close to my face in Fallout 3. I found it pretty easy on Oblivion (played on my friends 360), but in Fallout 3, I always ended up with a wierd, pointy/square nose, a horrible under/overbite, extremely pointy/jutting cheekbones... etc.

I hope New Vegas' character editor is more along the lines of Oblivion. but odds are, it will be the Fallout 3 editor with maybe a few more/different options.

The Oblivion Face Gen was much more granular than what was implemented in Fallout 3. Perhaps since we have an Age Slider this time around, they will give us more controls back. I gave up trying to tweak the face after a certain point. There was just not enough to adjust.

Well i think you may be in luck. They said they are using things from oblivion like age slider, so why not some more? Ethier way i think they might have improved some of this. But even if its not, im not gonna sit there looking at my game all day, kill some Geckos.

Now that the game is out (in some areas...bah!), can anyone give confirmation or denial that NV facial generation is the same as Fallout 3 - or give any new information that would help import a face from Fallout 3 into New Vegas?

No spoilers please!

Theres a video on youtube of FONV character creation, and all that looks different to me is their is now an age slider, same hair cuts and evreything. Obviously its a little bit different.

I was very happy that the game gave you 1 more chance before "venturing out into the wastelands" to change your character.

The hair color I chose for my guy looked great in the face editor, but when I got into game, it was WAY too light. So I picked a darker one (and still, without being able to preview it before finalizing the character), I at least ended up with a better looking hair color.

Had to pimp the Ronin and Tunnelsnakes do'. Now all I gotta do is find me some shades!

Great suggestion - I found one which has just the facial gen and not character creation, the options look the same as Fallout 3's Gene Projector. What I really need to know to do it by eye/from screenshots of the settings from F3 is; are the sliders the same?

I found this vid, all the sliders and evreything are exactly the same(at least to me anyway). I was hoping Obsidian would of added some new hairstyles for female characters, as they are a bit crappy, but hey ho

I tagged it because this is in general disscussion, and the mods are a bit funny at times

Thanks, looks like the tone sliders are exactly the same - let's hope the shape ones are too.

They are. Really for any type of customization we need a new geck so we can start tinkering.
