Fallout NV constantly overwrighting mod critical ini files

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 11:28 am

I have the steam downloaded client of FNV here.

I'm sure most in the Fallout/Oblivion mod aware world know of archiveinvalidatedinvalidated.

I can't make it work here due to the fact the game is constantly overwriting and setting the read only flag on
the file FALLOUTPREFS.INI located in the data path /user/mydocuments/mygames/FalloutNV where the save games go, etc.

Normally one edits this file to include reference to the bsa file ArchiveInvalidationInvalidated!.bsa

and one also makes sure this is done: bInvalidateOlderFiles and change it from 0 to 1.

That's basically all one did with Fallout3 and Oblivion in the relevant ini files for those two games.

However with Fallout New Vegas constantly overwriting that file (and resets to defaults )e modding the game will be a major pain.
Fallout.INI also is reset each time. Not good. Not good at all.

Anyone found a fix for this and is Steam the problem or is it FNV itself???
I tried disabling the steam cloud bit but that had no effect.

Perhaps changing the .ini to a 'read-only' file (right click, properties, then tick the read-only box) could be a temporary fix? That would mean you'd have to toggle that off and on every time you add new mods though...

Hopefully it'll get fixed soon.

Edit: Oops, didn't read the first post properly. You can't turn read-only off, make your changes, and turn it on again and play the game without it resetting?

I actually found out via http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1122314-mouse-acceleration-in-menus-is-crazy-again/page__view__findpost__p__16509275 that there are 2 falloutprefs.ini files for the downloaded version.

One in the standard My Games location, and one in the location in that thread. The directory is actually in Steam and is Steam\userdata\####\#of steam app\remote (Replace "#of steam app" with the app number Steam assigns to New Vegas for you).

The one in the Steam location might be the falloutprefs.ini being used in game, though I'm not to sure on that.

Actually I managed to just figure out my problem. A direct short to ground from keyboard to my chair.

I didn't think of a critical step.. once I edited the fallout.ini to REFLAG it as read only . Once that was done the game left FALLOUT.INI alone and my edits remained in place.

DOH.

Blush. I guess someone should write a primer refresher FAQ for those of us that should know better but forget due to being senile or something.

Cheers.
