Fallout New Vagas Launcher Crashes

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 12:16 am

Good Evening

I don't quite understand this, but every time I launch Fallout New Vegas, the Launcher crashes with the following

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BEX
Application Name: FalloutNVLauncher.exe
Application Version: 1.2.14.0
Application Timestamp: 4cc0aa7d
Fault Module Name: GameOverlayRenderer.dll
Fault Module Version: 1.1.0.43
Fault Module Timestamp: 4d26750d
Exception Offset: 0003d8ca
Exception Code: c000000d
Exception Data: 00000000
OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033
Additional Information 1: fc02
Additional Information 2: fc02e40da6adfee9255402024beff6e5
Additional Information 3: 4962
Additional Information 4: 4962814def15c520d29555372c50b2be

Now if I delete the INI files from the Fallout New Vegas directory, it works fine, until I close the game out. Then re launching the game it crashes again. I have to continue to delete the INI files and have the game detect my hardware just to get it working. It is more of an annoyance than anything else.

Run the launcher with windows xp service pack 3 compatibility mode. (go to your steam folder/steamapps/common/fallout new vegas right click the "FalloutNVLauncher", go to the compatibility tab, check the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select "windows XP (Service Pack 3)". I had the exact same problem, I tried this and it works just fine so far.

In that folder there is no launcher.......to run in XP compatiable mode. At least not on my computer where it installed Steam.

Did you download it through Steam? If you didn't, check the folder where you installed New Vegas. I downloaded New Vegas through Steam so that was the way mine was set up and stupidly assumed that you did the same.:( If you installed it through a disc and have a shortcut on your desktop that will work to, just right-click and go to properties and you will find the compatibility tab.

Just thought I'd chime in with my experience. I'd say about 95% of the time, when I would start up Fallout NV, the Launcher would immediately crash (with no sound) with the following error:

Faulting application name: FalloutNVLauncher.exe, version: 1.2.14.0, time stamp: 0x4cc0aa7d
Faulting module name: GameOverlayRenderer.dll, version: 1.1.0.43, time stamp: 0x4d26750d
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x00012433
Faulting process id: 0x56c
Faulting application start time: 0x01cbbd18096f9709
Faulting application path: c:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas\FalloutNVLauncher.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\GameOverlayRenderer.dll

Doing the "verify integrity of game cache" thing would always come up with 1 file bad, like many people are seeing. Anyway, I decided I'd try changing the extension on GameOverlayRenderer.dll (in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\ on Win7 64) to .bak and see what would happen. Lo and behold, the launcher started working reliably and I could actually play. Not sure what all this file is used for or if renaming it broke anything else, so try this fix at your own risk.

This worked great for me to stop the initial crash. Now to find out why it crashes in game occasionally.
