fallout new vegas lags, freezes, without any reason

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 10:22 am

(sorry for my english)
i've bought F.N.V. in december and i have installed it six times til now, the game still have a problem.
i put the graphics at minimum. i hit the launcher icon. i hit play. with the movies at the beginning it is all right, but when the real game begins (the courier is in the bed, the old man call for him to wake up) the game continues to run, but i hear only a basic sound, and nothing happens. so i hit ESC for 2 times and then the game goes forward, i heard the words of the NPC and the other sounds, BUT again, after a few secponds the problem reappears. i hit again ESC for 2 times and then all the same again.
some people have had this problem and the solution was to open the task manager while playing and then put the priority of FALLOUTNV.exe from normal to high, and return to the game. it seem to work for me for a while, but when i go out of the house of the medic the game begins to freeze (20 seconds) and to lag but (i think)) without any reason. Why?
fallout 3 runs perfectly on my pc.
I have an NVIDIA geforce gtx 460, 3,25 Gb Ram, 2.27 Ghz, 170 Gb of free space in my hard disk, so WHY FALLOUT NEW VEGAS is not working?
Last interesting thing. I can't see differences of lag bugs and freeze bugs: if i put the video resolution in high definition or in super minimum resolution the lags and the freezes are the same. i can't see the meaning of that. (and maybe you too because of my english :))
can you please help me? i've spent 50 euros for a game that doesn't work properly... i'm quite sad..'cause i have the pc requirements

Not particularly because of your English as a second language skills, or lack of them, but because you just haven't provided much useful information, I don't think you can expect answers yet. I can't think of anything helpful without knowing a great deal more, myself, that's certain.

Basic Hardware Specification Chart (Empty so far)

Processor Manufacturer: AMD / Intel
Processor Name / Type: Athlon X2 / Pentium D / C2D / dual core / quad, etc.
Processor Speed: ?.? Ghz
Operating System / Service Pack: WindowsXP with SP #?, Win7, Vista ? (Oh, no!)
System RAM: ? ? GBs (MBs, if less than 1024 ? )
Video (GPU) Manufacturer: ATI / Nvidia (only those two are supported, PERIOD, so please answer which of them you have)
Video Card Model: (examples) Radeon HD 5670 / Geforce GT 240
Video Card Driver Version: Catalyst ?.? / Nforce ??.??
. . (please use the numbers, not the word "latest")
Video Card onboard RAM: ? ? ? MBs
Sound Card Manufacturer:
Sound Card Model:

(And this is only for the raw hardware & driver variations. Potential software conflicts are far more likely to be game play problems, and developers cannot test for all possible program loads.)

P. S. Please use every day business style paragraph breaks, punctuation, and spelling.

Try setting the game to run in XP compatibility mode. Here is a link for instructions.

Also this Geforce Tweak Guide helped me out. I did not read the "TweakGuides Tweaking Companion" downloadable PDF but you may find it use full. I just followed the instructions that are on the web site. For instance I adujsted the "Anisotropic Filtering" because of a dip in my Frames Per Second. By the way you must download their free "Frames Per Second Utility" to see what is causing you any issues with your Frames Per Second. You will notice that you must keep you Frames Per Second above 25-30 frames. My game still looks great and plays without crashing now. By the way I still run my game in XP compatibilty mode even after the tweaks. I hope this helps you and let me know if you need anything else.

I would update your sound card drivers and close any audio control panels that came with your sound card and see if that fixes it.

Does the problem happen if the radio is on or off (does it make a difference)?

Can you paste your dxdiag, put it between a set of spoiler tags so it doesn't flood the thread:

So this:
All my dxdiag stuff
becomes this:

Spoiler

All my dxdiag stuff

Your dxdiag will show some more info and show if dxdiag detected any probs. It lists which codecs you have but you can see that using the program I'll mention next.

This game is affected by codecs more than most other games. You can download InstalledCodec to disable some codecs and try playing again. If you disable any codecs with InstalledCodec you can re-enable them whenever you want. I had some audio issues before and some radio issues and they were fixed by disabling a codec and installing madfilter instead.

Try disabling environmental effects if they're on, make a backup of Fallout_default.ini first and then open Fallout_default.ini in a text editor

In the [Audio] section (you can find it by searching for [Audio]):

; set the below to 0 to turn off these effects, if it's already 0 then do nothingbEnableEnviroEffectsOnPC=0

There are other audio variables in that file but I don't know if they'd be helpful for your prob, bMultiThreadAudio, bEnableAudioCache, iAudioCacheSize, iMaxSizeForCachedSound
