Well pretty much as that states I'll get that error message every once in awhile and the game will crash. no other huge bugs and it doesnt happen to consistently but I mean it's still annoying.

This is my exact problem that I've been trying to correct; Before it was just a CTD now its giving me that error message and closing itself, It seems the longer I play the more rapid the errors begin to occur.

I'm having the exact same problem. But I can almost predict when it will happen. It's usually whenever I try to loot a corpse. As soon as I close the loot window, i get the CTD.

Well i was reading up on some other forums. Do you guys use dual monitors? Cause I do, and they say that's a possible reason. Although I'm not sure if that's true or not.

I don't use dual monitors and after the Steam patch I get this exact crash in under 5min of playing every time i start game. I have had multiple crashes since patch went through but last 2 days had zero.

For me, the following solution solved this issue with Fallout 3 AND Fallout New Vegas as well.

QUAD CORE FIX:

The game engine has some issues with processors that have more than 2 cores. You can force the game to only use two of them and it will stop the freezing. I haven't had it freeze once since I did this several days ago.
Open up the fallout.ini file in: My Documents\My Games\FalloutNV
Find the line:
bUseThreadedAI=0
change it to:
bUseThreadedAI=1
Add another line after it and insert:
iNumHWThreads=2
This will limit the game to 2 cores and prevent the engine bug from causing the game to freeze.

Surprisingly, this worked like a charm.

i read somewhere that a possible solution may be to just update the drivers directly from steam. not sure if it's reliable yet.

Well, if you have a Core i5 then you have a Quad or Dual core. I cant tell which without knowing the model number of your CPU. In any case, you wont hurt anything by applying the quad core fix. If you have a Dual core it will still use both cores, and if you have a quad core, it will only use 2 cores. There is no performance penalty to this as the game engine really dont need more than that. All you get is improved stability and smoother gameplay.

That is a dual core processor.
I dont think that the addition of limiting the cpu to two threads will have any effect. But making the ai threated might. And well, I see no harm in trying even limiting the game engine to just two threads. Just make sure to backup your fallout.ini file before making changes in case you want to revert to what you had before.

this is the first time I have joined a messageboard and I am seriously seriously pissed off at what bethesda has done by including STEAM. I brought the special edition of NV and brought it home earlier today, now after 4 hours of trying to get it to load I am about to give up entirely on the whole franchise.

Is it so hard to write a game that installs of the DVD and runs without problems (or runs at all)?

And I agree with the earlier comments, STEAM is a bloody joke, why should I have to connect to STEAM to run the game? what happens if my internet connection goes down? .... wait I know I will be using the NV DVD as an ashtray.

very very very dissappointing bethesda, I am guna go find a "non-STEAM" game to play until someone "does something" about the STEAM integration.

You are typing in the wrong thread. This is about fixing performance issues, not installing.
