Fallout on PC

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 2:40 pm

My experience with OB and Beth has been limited to ES4-Oblivion, FO3, and FNV, all on the PS3. All I found easy after a certain point, but was able to “gimp” my character in order to provide a challenge and a more enjoyable gaming experience.

I just recently invested in a top-of-the-line gaming laptop (this was after I purchased FNV for console). I saw FO1 and FO2 for really cheap.

I’ve got about 300+ hours in Oblivion IV, 1000+ hours in FO3 and 78+ hours in FNV; all on console.

Your HONEST opinion; considering money and most importantly the time - should I invest in purchasing and moding computer games I’ve already played on console, or should I simply buy games I’ve never played (assuming I can find a good one or two) off the shelf?

If you enjoyed Oblivion and the Fallout games then yes, buy them for the PC. With mods you can drastically change the game if you want to so that they become a brand new experience for you. You'll certainly be able to find mods that won't make it easy for you after a certain point, just the opposite in fact. For Oblivion there's Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul and for Fallout 3 there's the Fallout Wanderers' Edition. And both games have versions of Mart's Monster Mod. All of those mods together will make your games much more challenging. It's still too early for a similar mod for New Vegas but there will be one eventually.

If you've played 1000+ hours of Fallout 3 with NO mods then... prepare to spend the rest of your life playing Fallout 3 and FO:NV with mods on PC. ;)

Get it for PC. I have it for PS3 and I'm about to swap it out for the PC version. Too damn glitchy and I have been informed the PC version has achievements. Why should that matter? I dunno but it does. And the mods, when they come around, are supposedly game altering so the PC version is a good investment. Cheaper too.

If I were in your shoes, here's what I would do:
I would say to myself that I already spent $60 dollars on a console game and so I would be reluctant to pay another $50 for a game I already own. However, New Vegas is JUST THAT DAMN GOOD and can be made even better with modding. You already spent 1000+ hours in FO3, so it's almost a no-brainer: You'll get lots of playtime out of this one.

So should you get New Vegas? Yes.
Should you get New Vegas NOW? NO! Why? Because you can be almost positive that they will go the same route at FO3: There will be plenty of DLC released, and eventually they will have a Game of the Year edition. When that hits shelves, THEN you get it for PC. That way, they will have plenty of time to patch up the game, and the modding community will have had plenty of time to come up with awesome mods for it and patch those as well.

As long as your computer can handle it, and you know some of the things to do to make it better if it becomes really bad then yes. Mods can really make things interesting, and you can make it so your game is made to cater for you and it's unique.

Trying to kill stuff at level 50 in Oblivion on the hardest difficulty was an exercise in maschism..... and I never got any mods for it lol........ FO 3 and NV are not anywhere near as tedious as those fights.

*EDIT* at 50 it took me like 5 minutes to kill stuff when they could kill me in 2-3 hits.....

There is nothing the console version can do that the PC version can't do better. If you have enough hardware and you don't get it for PC there's something odd going on.

THIS

Mods are gamechaning and enhance roleplaying, immersion, realism, content, replay value and gaming experience. It's like a different enhanced game. I actually feel sorry for the people who play it in consoles. The guy above said it.

Here's my list of mods. Having so many mods and downloading many at one time though is kinda dangerous as you might experience crashes from some of them and not know what's the cause. But these, with this order at least, work for me. Some are minor but the must have (and the bigger ones) are: http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=36827 FWE and MMM. An optional must have is RTS in which you get to build your own village/base recruit anyone and much more and even replant trees from oasis.

I wouldn't buy another copy of New Vegas straight away. I'd recommend waiting a while for patches to get released and the price to drop a bit. Then it's more stable, you have to pay less, and your memories of the game will have faded a bit so it's more enjoyable again. :)

Modding adds so much replayability and entertainment, you'll probably be saving money because you won't have to buy new games for a LONG time.

Although, what povuholo says makes sense. A lot of mods will be out by then, and the current ones will be more refined. Your choice - perhaps wait for a Steam Christmas sale...

One always hears on many forums the question (and multiple times) ---> Should I get the PC version for ?" ... from people who play the game on a console game machine.

One NEVER hears the question (I haven't yet) ---> "I play the game on PC; should I go get the console version?"

Now why do you think that is so? Based on that, which do you think really is the better gaming experience?

Your Fallout New Vegas game is currently active. You are playing it NOW. So start playing the better version now. Level up your character and have your leveled up character ready to go on the PC when the official add-on content is released and when the fan mods are ready to go.

When you're ready to do any of the other games, go get it then.

BTW ... What laptop did you get?

I’ve no question about which offers “the better gaming experience”. For me, it’s a question of time. If I’ve already played the game, will the mods make the experience good/new enough to concentrate my time on moding a game already played versus a brand new game? I’m assuming the trial an error in determining which mods work well together is a “wee-bit” of a time investment.

But, I think I’ll take your advice ttraveler, and purchase the PC version now.

It appears the consensus is clear, at least the opinion of those on this forum, I appreciate the feedback, especially the list of mods from Seremoth.

BTW, the laptop I got is an Asus G73.

You're welcome for the advice.

PC version just saves a lot of aggravation for me. It allows me to fix the scripting bugs when you know the game should not really be doing what it's doing. I just stumbled on another one right now! Easy to fix using the console. I'd tell you what the bug is but this is the general discussion area so I can't do a spoiler here.

Nice laptop! :goodjob:

Return to Fallout: New Vegas
