I've done DiD before in the past, but was putting it off for Skyrim until they fixed a few things. That said, between this anda couple Master-level thread discussion, I'm getting inspired to try this.

One one hand, I admire the gameplay choice, Dead is Dead would be very challenging and I think your immersion level is much higher than mine where I can run around and kill things until I die, then take a safer approach. The biggest thing that kills immersion for me is pausing the game midfight to drink 5 potions or eat 100 apples. The magician/bear/etc is coming right at me and I get to say "hmm lets see he is shooting frost so let me slip on my frost resistant boots and that bear is big so I will slip on my heavy armor and my helmet that gives me more magicka and..."

There should be a way to play (I see this working easier on keyboard) where once "enemies are near" you can't pause and if you want to switch weapons you have to use hotkeys and you can have a hotkey to drink a potion but drinking the potion takes time and happens in real-time. This would do a lot more for immersion for me than DiD.

There's an easy way to play like that, and it's called self control.

Don't have to be rude, I didn't know that I could hotkey potions, but I do plan to play like this in the future.

Wasn't trying to be. If I play like this, I wouldn't chug a potion in the middle of combat. The enemy's blade would be in and out of you by the first sip. I'd drink up if I managed to get some space between my attacker or if the battle had ended.

I'm tempted to try a Dead Is Dead on Master, but only once I've finished my current playthrough. I don't have the balls atm.

Also, TS, with the greatest respect, you don't need to press enter every time yo finish a sentence. :)

I actually love the fact that the game pauses when you go drink and eat, it put's a tiny "turn based-ish" element into the game, where you wonder if you should consume meals, food or potions.
You can look at all your scrolls and powers, and think of the best way to escape/fight so you don't have to reset the game...
Planning during combat is a great rpg element in my opinion.

I frapsed the outcome of my latest sticky situation (where I lost my companion, all food and potions and fled into a foresty situation, where I came across a hostile mage.)

I was just finished buying 2 (yay) pieces of meat from a hunter when I saw the mage standing in front of a cave or entrance into a mountain. I easily fled further away from the road into a (small?) forest.
I waited a little and decided I should travel back on the road to Whiterun but suddenly the mage came out of nowhere into my flank.
I ran and got a little stuck on a small ridge, since you cannot jump on certain angles.
But only one attack in my back so far, and the second one didn't come, luckily.
I continued to run and I saw a guy sitting near a tent.
My suspicion of random encounters was raised so I stopped and tried to run in a small circle around him (couldn't go back obviously).

"I see you burn"... "Never should have come here"
Two taunts in my back... I was ready to die, in a last desperate attempt to help myself I equipped healing in both hands, since I had no stamina left to flee with...
Lucky for me, there was nothing when I looked behind!

After watching the vid I realized the guy sitting near his tent actually attacked the mage, So instead of 1+1=2 it was 1-1=0
I will never know the outcome of that battle though... :(

How did you turn just the compass off?

A mod?

A mod?

Go to C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\My Games\Skyrim
Open SkyrimPrefs.ini, and search for [Interface] section
Change bShowCompass=1 to bShowCompass=0

There is also a SkyrimPrefs.ini in the steam folder of Skyrim, but changing that one doesn't work.

Dagnammit. I'm on the 360. :(

I tried turning HUD transparency to 0% but that gets rid of health and stamina too and that is just a little bit too hardcoe for me. :P

Thanks for the help, I'll just have to wait until I eventually get Skyrim for PC. :)

I waited quit some time with doing the dragon quest this run, and because it was a breeze in my previous play-through's I went through it like a walk in the park.

I got neglectful about food and potions since I figured he wouldn't even hit me once...

I also underestimated his range.
I never got hit by it before so didn't know about the damage it would do.

I got hit once, panicked, and started running...
Ran directly into one of the fires and a rock, got disorientated and didn't unsheathe my bow.

Here you can see how I handled the situation:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4dT33MjHdg&hd=1 (skip to 2:20 for the interesting bit)

Spoiler
Real life reasons for this fail:

- Tried to make cool footage for the vid by going down.
- No potions and little food
- decadent strolling through the quest.
- neglectfulness.

Gonna reroll tomorrow when I have mustered the strength to start again, gonna go through the first quests quickly until I need to go the bearded men.
It's all a breeze, at least the beginning, I just die due to dumb faults...

Btw I'm not acting popular by posting on youtube, I frapsed a whole lot of gaming, and decided to capture some vids, when I saved in a pretty dangerous situation.
I always try to fraps cool gameplay.

i watched the video. you had a level up there. Could you of used that to boost health? i thought when you leveled all stats reset to max. or is that against your DiD rules?

DiD is a challenge, especially trying to complete the Main Quest (do-able on novice level), but for a real challenge, why not see if you can make 1 million gold coins just from chopping wood/mining/farming? don't know if you can have 1 million gold coins? probably stops at 999,999? i dont know.

Good luck on your next character. Also, I noticed what an above poster mentioned; maybe you know this and it is against your play-style rules, but if you activate the level-up you had there at the end of your video, your health would have returned to full. Maybe it's a little cheat, but it's better than dying, and it is part of the game. Fire damage can get out of hand because of the extra burning damage, hard to stabilize that.

Would love to have known that. Not gonna (ab)use it as lingering uber potions though.

Maybe you can think of it as along the lines of a final fantasy elixir?
