Farengar is a Jerk

Post » Sun Jun 10, 2012 12:36 pm

So, I was in Whiterun the other day visiting the court wizard Farengar to buy some spells. I accidently picked up a two gold piece roll of blank paper off his desk when I was trying to get his attention for a conversation. As soon as I had realized what I had done, I dropped it back on his desk.

You know what that jerk did? He hired not one but three thugs to teach me a lesson. Well after showing those guys the what not, I went back to Whiterun to have a few words with that Farengar fellow . . . but all he would say for himself was that if I had the aptitude I might want to join the mages college in Winterhold.

Does it really make sense to send three thugs after you over a 2 dollar roll of paper? Another character, a thief, legitimately did something bad but no one saw him do it, no one saw him anywhere around the scene of the crime, so how could anyone know to send thugs after him?

The whole "if you steal something from an NPC, they will send thugs/assassins after you" sounded so good in theory, but in practice it seems to fall flat more often than not.

Anyone else experience similar (hopefully funny) situations with NPCs sending thugs after you for no good reason?

I've had Jon Battle-born try and have me killed after I murdered his mother - No one seen that either...

Safe to Say Jon didn't last long...

I have to admit.

He always gives me dirty looks, harrassing words, etc.

If I could, I would kill him... without any trouble.

I was messing around with the calm spell and pickpocketing bandits for some reason. After some trial and error, I killed the bandits and called it a day. So I'm walking through the woods minding my own business and there are 3 thugs standing around. Ok great, but I didn't steal anything from anybody, so this'll be interesting. Luckily a troll showed up to distract them. After cleaning up what was left, I loot one of the thugs to see which jerk was gonna pay. So I read the note, well, lo and behold it was signed.... -Bandit. I couldn't believe it.

I always seem to get a bandit attack, courtesy of Moira.

The Hagraven.

Who I've never seen before.

Ever.

I was roleplaying and cleaning some wolf fur and weapons in whiterun's small stream and a guard came up to me threatening to kick my ass if I do it again.

It Is funny, but also pisses me off.

You either stole from or killed Anise outside Riverwood. That's her sister.

As for Farengar, he needs to stick around to have the conversation with Odahviing.

That's priceless! But also something I hope they improve in future games. I mean it is funny and all, but dead bandits shouldn't be putting a bounty on your head. That's worse than the "psychic" guards from Oblivion.

The best incident I had like that was with the blacksmith for the companions. He asked me get the final piece of wuthraad from the harbingers drawer. I came back with it, and he wasn't at his forge anymore. I finally found him walking into his home (after I picked the lock to get in) at which point his son told me to leave and then attacked me when i ignored him. Meanwhile the smith, now watching me kill his son, comments "This should be good! My money's on the big one!"
