There's a lot of mods coming out for both player housing (to remove the god awful choices you have in the game compared to Fallout 3 player housing) and also mods that want to reduce the availability of food in the wasteland. I was thinking, since vegetation plays a role in New Vegas, is it possible to make a mod that would allow the PC to farm crops? What I'm thinking is, you'd have a set of items you'd have to bring to a field, 'activate' them kind of like when you're making a drug at the My First Laboratory, and then you have to wait a certain amount of time to be able to pick it up. The food types could be unique, so they would be more restorative than other -FOD and -H20 items found in the game world. Or, you could use them as a source of cash. Anyone else thought of this?

This sounds like it could be pretty interesting.

I just had this vision of the player walking out into the middle of a flat piece of land, dropping a hoe, and activating it on the ground to create a long row of tilled dirt... then using a bag of some sort of seed or another to 'sow' the row with seeds. Plenty of Maize in New Vegas, aye? (Seems like that's really the most common crop... though maybe Broc Flower and Xander Root would be popular) So then you go back inside, and you wait around eating and sleeping and drinking and crapping (on your usable toilets thanks to a mod) until a long enough time has gone by that your crops have grown.

A script, maybe involving the weather, would dictate the 'yield' you got.

Step three... profit.

I'd go for it.

I'd love to grow my own Maize and brew up moonshine to sell. That would be pretty damn fun, to me.

I could see this being pretty awesome, if the person to make it were to have at their disposal the meshes and textures to replicate a number of interesting plants which might be cultivated in the house and/or desert climes.

Without that, though, I'm not entirely sure how much there would be to farm? Cacti?

Shouldn't be to hard using NVSE[although I'm not the person to do it].

Player has an item which can add a tilled soil object to the world like you said [would be implemented somewhat like this http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=36922]

When the player interacts with this object they receive this menu
--------------------------
12 plots Available
Hydration 0%
[Water Plants]
[Plant Seeds] - disappears when all plots are filled
--------------------------

For quick implementation the plant seeds option would take a growable vegetable/fruit like maze and fill 3 plots
Water plants would accept the three water types purified, dirty and irritated each would provide an amount of hydration [pure 100%,dirty 50% irritated 25%] the soil consumes 5% hydration per game hour and takes just 2.5 days to grow [total need of 300 hydration or 3 pure,6 dirty or 12 irradiated waters to grow]

Alternative
All waters provide hydration, but irradiated water causes a chance of crops dying or becoming irradiated something like pure add 0% chance, dirty add 10% chance irradiated adds 20% so with all waters hydration being even all pure water means 100% chance of good crop, only dirty = 15% chance of crop irradiation, 30% chance of crop death and irradiated has 30% irradiated 60% death

Later could have seeds and seed bags, seeds are acquired the same way bottle caps are after drinking a nuka/sunset, seed bags are sold by shops
Also could implement a system where if you plant near a water source it receives hydration + radiation from there so you don't have to water it

That's pretty freakin' awesome the way you just put that all out there like...

Here I was, puzzling over the idea in my head, and bam... someone puts all my thoughts into words, and then some. I hadn't even gotten around to considering nearby sources of water... or even much about hydration. The way you described it though, it sounds so simple! Maybe someone will see that and be like... 'Yeah, that's exactly how I'd do it!' and make this.

I wanna be a Mutfruit farmer! Oh yeah.

Or radioactive watermelons... O.o

Thanks always happy to lend ideas,...for some reason always wanted a FPS farming game....not sure why though...

oh one more idea could be combined with http://newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34814 where temperature + humidity etc help/hinder crop growth

hey Miko, you can use Skycappa's resources on his FO3 nexus page. He has a complete farming and fishing modders resource ready to implement (among other jewels).

And I see the mutants coming while you're away and stomping out your seedlings!!!!

heheheheh

It's been done in Fallout 3 so certainly could be done here.

Should not require FOSE/NVSE imo, if I can grow a deathclaw you can grow a plant.

Gain currency.

But seriously. It would require some work, but not loads. Also, you couldn't have it create rows all at once, the landscape isn't even enough for that, it would have to be individual plants, or if it was rows, they'd have to be rows of separate objects that were placed at the right height via script.
