That seems broken. I've killed my own Frost Atronachs and never gotten anything for it. They are just in my way.

if its the one I am think it is with Conjuration and Destruction magic, I can say it works just a slow process and more time consuming than the smithing trick

Yes but smithing is only 1 skill and useless for mages I don't think that there will be faster way to increase multiple skills.
