Fast Travel..... Good or Bad?

Post » Wed Jun 27, 2012 3:50 am

Should fast travel be limited or even scrapped for the next elder scrolls game? I personally think that fast travel shortens the game considerably what do you think? Would you prefer the next game to go back to how morrowind was travel wise?

This debate has been hashed out many times and I will tell you that this thread will end up either locked or post limit with futile banter in favor of one's opinion. It will never go away since there is enough pro fast travel to warrant its existence. If you don't like it, then don't use, is the thought process that will be adapted by Bethesda. It is the only way to appease the entire fanbase.

As SonOfSithis said, you don't have to use it but the option is there for those that do. Personally, I like wandering around the wilderness finding caves to plunder and get really immersed in the experience. Others prefer to power through the game, have limited time to play or would prefer not to spead 20 minutes crossing the map to get to the next objective and therefore would prefer to fast travel.

It's all a matter of personal opinion, a bit like the response to in-game marriage. For those who want it, it's there, and for those that don't it's not intrusive enough to spoil the game for you and can easily be avoided.

imo it's bad 99% of the time, but see no reason to remove it from the game, if you don't want to use it don't use it. Most ppl play games as a casual hobby so i can understand that some ppl don't want to spend the few hours they have gaming running accros the world.

From Ivarstead to High Hrothgar and back are the only times I use it (unless I'm stuck). That just wasn't fun the first time... and it's still not fun the first time on every character. Long boring walk, one remotely interesting encounter.

I'd say that its neutral. The option is there for those of us who want to use it, and for those who don't, they can simply ignore the feature.

But let me ask you this: do you REALLY want to climb up the Seven Thousand Steps every time you want to visit the Greybeards or Paarthurnax?

I was playing Far Cry 2 the other day, which doesn't have fast travel. I've always thought I didn't like Fast Travel, but I also found it incredibly frustrating when I didn't have the option in FC2. Though the comparison isn't great, as there is a lot wrong with FC2...

Without it, the world is certainly bigger. But I don't have the time to play the game as much as I used to in the Morrowind days, so (as Sokjal says) it's actually very useful to me now. So long as you don't overuse it, of course, because then I've found that you lose the sense of Skyrim as a "world".

I don't mind fast trave, I just wish the game wasn't designed around it.
If they improved the carridge system one could have both.

What they need there is a lift/elevator. The dwarven ruins have them , after all!

I think it's just right the way it is now because people have the freedom to do what they want. I think some people can ruin their game (and to me, that's ruining it) by fast-traveling too much but I don't think the option should be gone. You miss a lot when you fast-travel too much...and there's plenty to miss. I mostly don't use it but I wouldn't want the option to be gone. :tes:

i agree with you view on FC2 it can be a bit frustrating when you can't even drive for more than a minute with out having to get out and kill some ppl. it gets old fast

That's the main reason I stopped playing it. The enemy AI was terrible for picking you up about a mile away and then spamming you with guns and cars. =/ Fast travel would have been greatly appreciated there.

For all the people who say "they don't have time" so they fast travel. I totally get that, but I also don't.

It's not like walking is completely devoid of content. There's random encounters (some of which are close enough together to create some very unique situations) and there's plenty of stuff to see/do out in the wilderness. Everyone complains that it takes so long to smith, but when I walk from one place to another, when I get there I've got ten pelts and some ore.

That's before even going inside where I'm headed. It's also a fantastic way to get alchemy ingredients and NOT boring at all. Now, I can understand fast traveling BACK, since it's likely that the way there is cleared, but you miss out by fast traveling. It's NOT a waste of time to walk.

I think it's a very good feature, I use it quite often my first few playthroughs of the game and then really stop using it when I want to get into things and explore. The game is so much better when you walk to a lot of places and explore. It's common for me to start a character then raise him up the first fifteen or so levels just roaming around the reach.

If I could suggest one thing to Bethesda, it would be an option to turn it off in the Options menu. That might make some players happy.

Most people who "lack self control" would just turn it back on when they want to use it. It would be more "appropriate" to have the option on character creation. A hardcoe-like game type (with needing to eat and sleep etc...) would be a solution.

Then they'd need to implement a way to get out when you get stuck in a rock or something though.

This. Plus the option is there now. It is not like the game forces you in any instance to use FT. Only those who can't stick to their own rules violate said rules.

I guess those who are only interested in completing the MQ and playing the game on a simple level and are not caring about immersion

That's probably a good enough reason alone to keep it in the game. =p

It's not about immersion for me. I just don't see how playing the game is wasting time you could be spending playing the game.

There's TONS of awesome little things that I bet 95% of the people who've gotten the trophy/chievie for the game never even saw. Nevermind awesome unmarked places, and great explore spots too. It's sad really.

Maybe it should be disabled in a harder game mode in future?

Why? Why can't the 'hardcoe' players just ignore it?

I use fast travel so that I can avoid visiting certain areas so that things have a time to respawn. You need to stay away from the area you picked your flower for 10 days for the flower to grow back.
