Fast travel- making it more realrisky

Post » Thu Nov 01, 2012 11:12 am

Something I never understood in fallout or TES games is that fast travel is used to get you from A to b without ANY trouble and the only requirement for its use is to have no enemies nearby. Why is this? Before getting the locations to be able to fast travel to them we all travel through dangerous areas with many creatures/ people wanting us dead yet once we reach the location we can come and go via fast travel without any issue and I just dont buy that.

Why not make it so Fast travel has a cost/risk so one cant just fast travel all willy nilly without a care in the world?
I propose that fast traveling costs health to reach a location and the reason : you are traveling through dangerous areas! You are being slashed/shot/bitten/punched as you go to where you want to go! The further away the location you are fast traveling to the more health you lose so if you go too far you obviously die so the smaller the distance the less damage you take or if its short enough no damage.

At least this is my idea anyway, I think it would help encourage people to actually walk a little bit.

Or have something like make fast travel have the waiting timer and when the timer reaches the end you get to the destination and while the timer is moving you have a chance of being dragged out of fast travel in an area thats on route to your destination due to being attacked (think random battles from classic RPGs) and once the enemy is dealt with you get a pop up to continue fast travel or cancel it to walk.

I just dont buy it that my character can just stroll through the map derp eyed as he fast travels perfectly safe while taking the long way is dangerous.

Edit: Well, to be honest my first argument is sorta pointless. It will be refuted and or most likely deleted. So I'll just add here that while it's a great idea it's not something Bethesda has an interest in doing nor should it be a priority in case they shift their vision for their games in a more positive direction.

Hand-holding. Accessibility. Player convenience.

Sadly for modern gaming, those things take priority...

I guess Bethesda figure gamers will get flustered and throw their milk and cookies on the floor if they can't beam themselves around "willy nilly".

Bethesda scrapped an idea to make carriage travel happen in real time (PC users can download their unfinished version of real time carriage travel in the form of a mod on Steam Workshop). It's too bad they couldn't get it to work. I would have loved it. And it would have had a lot of what you are looking for, I think.

I dislike the notion of "paying" for fast travel with health. That makes little sense to me. But I do like the idea of a percentage chance of interruption. I think that would do a lot to make my character feel like she continued to be a part of the game world during fast travel.

One of my objections to menu-based fast travel is that it makes me feel as though my character is being magically whisked away from the game world. I don't feel connected to the world or the events going on in the world during those seconds. A small chance of interruption would go a long way toward making me feel that my character was still part of the world during fast travel.

I'm already guaranteed to spawn a dragon or vampire attack when I fast travel. I stick to carriages.

Yeah I have seen that mod as well, the driver even has unused dialog too a shame really. And I thought of the health price for fast travel to add some sense to it since it is odd how you can wade through enemy territory all across skyrim and yet not get hurt during it but I get why it would not make sense as well.
