Fast Travel: Nirn Airlines

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 7:19 am

Is there anyone else out there that tries to play with out fast traveling? I try to but forget or end up doing it anyway. I would the like option to actually turn it off. Either in the menu or before you start a new character so It can't be used with him/her. Anyway that could happen?

I have a mod that disables fast travel, I could just go to the game files and edit it but I don't feel like writing all the stuff down and re-adding it when I want fast travel again. Doesn't matter anyway, since that mod is plagued by the aspect of Peryite bug. -_-

I use the wagons, but that's all. Seems realistic enough for my tastes.

I have a mod that disables fast travel,

I've had it for a while too.. much funner to just ride a horse around. I tend to wait for Shadowmere though, and I don't do the DB for a while.

I occassionally fast travel. A recent example is following the main quest - my character needed to go from Riverwood to High Hrothgar. As a RPer, it would have been horribly immersion-breaking to just say 'Yeah, I'll head back to the Greybeards next time I'm near Ivarstead', so instead I fast-travelled.

At the same time, random encounters on the road never cease to amaze me. I ran into Balbus for the first time the other day!

I

destroyed the Dark Brotherhood
and I use Frost along with the horse armor mod. Shadowmere, of course, for my DB character.

with a better transportation system, there's no need for fast travel. although it's convenient, it's an immersion-breaker. still, every now and then, I fall to the trap and use it :P

Turning off the compass, not looking at my map, and disabling fast travel instantly made my game massively more fun. Better than any mod, IMO.

I don't. When I disable the no fast travel mod it breaks my game.

It can actually be quite fun, finding everything yourself. Not like you can get lost easily, there are signs EVERYWHERE telling you which way every city is.

Wagons only. At least mounted combat means not having to dismount every time there is a wolf on the road now.

It does for 1 handed weapons. Tried mounted combat on my sword and board guy, it never.. EVER hits anything.

I don't use fast travel at all in the game except...to go to High Hrothgar!

It was epic the first time I discovered High Hrothgar, really one of those breathtaking moments climbing the 7,000 steps. And it was epic each time I visited the place again for the next dozen times.

However, after a while, the novelty wore off. At this point, I usually make my way to Ivarstead then fast travel from there to the peak. I also use Frostfall, so each time I fast travel it uses up a fire starting kit (and possibly increases the wear degradation on my tent and bedroll).

I have disabled my compass and I'm also playing with a mod that disables fast travel. Technically, it's a mod that disables map markers. The thing I love about this is that the map does not get cluttered up with ugly black-and-white icons as my games progresses. I've always thought the 3D map looked very attractive, but it always gets obscured as the hours pass. To me all those icons look like billboards covering up a scenic view.

I also use a mod that adds carriages to towns like Dawnstar and Falkreath. This makes going without fast travel a lot less tedious for me. It's more like Morrowind now, where a Silt Strider or Guild Guide would take you to a point close to where you wanted to go and you hoofed it the rest of the way. This mod also increases the amount charged for carriage travel (200 gold for the vanilla routes, 500 gold for the new destinations). Combined with a mod that greatly reduces the amount of gold I get from merchant transactions, carriage travel in my game sometimes requires a bit of advance planning. At level 20 my current character can still find herself in the position of not being able to afford to hire a carriage.

I ever do the main quest again I will use fast travel. As several people have pointed out, that trip up to High Hrothgar can get really tedious once you've done it a few times. I did it on foot the first time, but I don't think I could do it again.

Since you're on PC you don't have to! Just use `coc highhrothgar :tes:

I tried to do no fast travel or wagons but actually didn't like it because quests took me forever and I was progressing through the game very slowly (also partly because whenever I'm walking to a place I will always get distracted by bandit camps and such along the way). Now I will use carriages and it feels right to me. Since carriages can't take you everywhere I still have to walk to a lot of places but it saves considerable time and keeps me interested

then again, a map like the "Daedric invasion" mod would be awesome for Skyrim. maybe with dragon language written, an old map of the dragon priests..
without a map I'd get lost...

Depends if I am playing or not, sometimes I just want to test out a mod quickly so that I know whether or not a) it works and B) i like it. If both a and b are a yes, I leave it in my load order, and load my game again back to where I was as if I was just going to carry on.

I avoid it most of the time, but when going to High Hrothgar or when encountering a permanent crash zone, it's a good thing to have available.
