Favorite Hold Capitol?

Post » Fri Jun 15, 2012 3:46 pm

Here's a new "What's your favorite?" question for you...

Hold capitals. Which one do you like best? Base your answer on any aspect of the city you can think of. Architecture, dynamics, population... amount of chickens, you name it.

Personally, I like Markarth. I love the idea of making a home, or even a settlement, in the remnants of a long lost civilization's homes or settlements. The running water is a perfect touch, beautifully accenting the white of the stone and gold of the dwemer doors and machinery. Not to mention all the parkour opportunities.

So, what's your favorite hold capital?

Edit: Sorry about the incorrect spelling in the title. Thanks to Invader for pointing that out. Can anyone tell me how to change the title of the topic?

Same here I love the markarth. Although that's where I'm most prone to screen tearing :(

Agreed. When I first entered Markarth, I wandered around for a good 15-30 minutes oohing and aahing at the place. I remember that I got there by accident,

Solitude. I love the architecture and overall feel of the city - the friendly atmosphere, lively marketplace and bright colors really attract me to the city. The Bard's College, Castle Dour and the docks also add a real atmosphere.

Whiterun is a close second though, followed by Riften.

I love the docks of Solitude. The East Empire Company warehouse is such a beautiful grotto. And the fact that it's under a land bridge makes it even cooler. And I agree with you. Whiterun is definitely a close second.

That is exactly the same thing that happened to me.

Windhelm solely because it is home to my palace, Hjerim. I absolutely love the house, and it helps that the city is one of the most intimidating fortresses I've seen.

Windhlem would be better if Ulfric bothered to use his wealth to help keep the city in good condition.

Do you mean capital? I was a little confused at first when I saw the title.

Anyhow, I'd have to say my favourite hold capital would have to be Markarth. The claustrophobic atmosphere, the integration of Dwemer architecture, just the overall dark atmosphere and political tension due to the presence of the forsworn, and in particular the Thalmor.

Edit: Well there's also the Silverblood family, but nothing's happening to them for a while.

Hjerim. Because it has a forge, enchanting and alchemy table. At least I think it does. I just like the convenience.

I would have to say windhelm. It has an old stone fortress look about it. The people aren't the friendliest, but you get used to them. The houses are nice, and the shops are full of people. I just like the style of the city.

although i prefer most garden-cities, such as the town-country layout and setting of whiterun, i also like falkreath primarily because of it's setting. but i have to admit, i've grown quite fond of riften. it has a certain dikeensian charm, and i do like the surrounding area. it's also the only city you can own a home with an adjacent transition point to the rest of the world. plus the view of the lake at dusk is quite nice...

windhelm is easily one of the worst, especially it's inhabitants, along with dawnstar and winterhold, which is just a frozen, vacant patch of land outside of the college. i'm not a big fan of cold weather, which is why i'm glad the creators decided to create a variety of biomes instead of making skyrim just a plain, ice-swepped tundra.

I prefer Riften the most. I love the fact that there is water all around and it has a gloomy, stormy feel (Rain is my favorite weather). I also love the shops and the thieves guild in the area.

Although a fairly lame village, my favorite is Falkreath. Does that count?? I like how it is tucked away in the forrest.

Markarth and Riften are both really good. Hard for me to choose between the two, but since I'm playing a vampire right now I live in Markarth (good vibe for evilish characters if you do some of the quests there). Markarth just has really unique architecture and the water running through the city is quite cool. Riften on the other hand is neat because it's two levels and very much feels like a city next to the water. I also like how Honeyside opens to the outside of Riften looking into the harbor.

Dawnstar. I like how quaint it is while being right against the ocean. I'd like a house there.

Such a difficult question. They all have pretty unique styles to them. If I had to choose it comes down to markarth or solitude. Markarth because of the dwarven architecture and solitude because it has that imperial style and always felt very lively to me.

I also really love Markarth. When I first saw a screenshot of Markarth, I thought it would be some really cool dungeon or something.

Still Whiterun. The architecture is great, I love the viking feelings. The housing districts are a nice touch, although I wish they would be more distinct. Shops are conveniently located along the main strip and the companions section is fantastic. My only gripe is

not owning the leader's quarters once the dragonborn becomes leader of the companions. Along with another post, not being able to assign and negotiate contracts for myself and the other companions.

I would have to say Solitude or maybe Whiterun but I guess I end up hanging out in Solitude the most lots to do there. Not a fan of all the minor hold capitols though.

For sure, this hold. I also love how dark the city is. The black stone with white snow, is just perfect for me

Whiterun because it reminds me of Edoris from Lord of the Rings
