Favorite Non-Words

Post » Sun Oct 02, 2011 10:12 pm

What are some words you've heard other people say that aren't actually words?

My favorites at the moment are:

(1) Conversating
(2) Irregardless

Basically English words turned into Maltese by adding a suffix or prefix usually found in Maltese words, or vice versa. Can't really explain it unless you're Maltese but a lot of people do this. For example:

Relaxing -> Irrelaxjajt. The "jajt" at the end is usually found in adjectives.

Although what I said has nothing to do with favourite non words. :P

These
Spoiler
`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Some of them are actually words now, but quite a few of those weren't before.

That was very funny :D

"Off of" actually sounds natural to me. Maybe a http://public.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/nonerrors.html thing?

Flexnar (do you know what the square root of one is?)

Bacon (too holy to be considered a word, only a holy item)

and also, I feel smart for knowing what Brillig means in the post above...

I mean in things where it's a positive.

"Get off of that horse" would be accurate, though the "of" is superfluous.

"Based off of" is completely wrong, because you base things "on" other things.

Dunno; it's always sounded jarring to me, though. We had some neighbours from darkest Essix who used to say it, but I'm not sure I've encountered it elsewhere. Well, except online, probably by the same people who say "alot"!

Don't know if these are what you would count as non-words, but they are ones I hear a lot.

Supposably (supposedly)

Joistses (supposably the plural of joist, which is joists)

Ax (as in: let me ax you a question)

Seafoodplate (as in the french term: s'il vous pla?t)

I'll edit in some more as I think of them...

One that comes to mind...
Terribad = terrible + bad

When I was younger I used to combine "can" and "you,I,we" Not sure how I spell these but...
Can + I = Ki
Can + We = Kwee
Can + You = Q

Right now my favorite is "Doofenshmirtz" from Phineas and Ferb. It works well in place of [censored], dork, imbicile, smarty pants, klutz...or just because it's fun to say!

Also, one of my favorites is "Shazbot" (SHOZZ-bot), an Orkan profanity that Mork used in Mork and MIndy.
