Favourite "D'oh!" Moment

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 11:33 am

Hey everyone, I've been actively playing Skyrim for the past month or so and I've recently found this forum and it's great. I just wanted to start a thread where people can share some funny experiences that they've had in the game. In particular, think of a moment where you've done something foolish or unnecessary because of a lack of understanding while playing the game.

For example, I was at Fort Neugrad near Helgen and I got the key to the library and the bandit chief's journal. Now, I was a very high level so I just unlocked the basemant and eliminated the wizard there easily before I killed the bandit chief so I thought nothing of it. I didn't even think it was a library because there were, well, ruined books, some other random stuff and nothing more. I read through the bandit's journal and thought nothing of it for some reason and I ended up meticulously exploring every room and every wall in Fort Neugrad. I even went into the mountains around there thinking there had to be some secret entrance to this old library. About 50 minutes later I took a look at the journal again and it said that the bandit chief sent the mage, Brandish, down to the library to check it out. It wasn't one of my most defining moments in the game but I laughed about it anyway.

** Potential Spoilers**

When I was looking for the chest in the Arcaneum.... I spend literally HOURS scanning ever little detail of that stupid room and gave up on it. Few days later I was talking to a friend who said its right infront of one of the bookcases, me thinking he was full of it since he made it sound so obvious, went to check it out.

BIG CHEST in front of a bookcase.... Laughed and was really pissed at the same time. Hours of looking around that place and it was right in front of my face

When I finally realized that Shouts aren't automatically unlocked via Dragon Souls, but that I had to actually do that myself! LOL

I was excited to finally play Skyrim and check out all those wonderful things I read about. I couldn't wait to see and slay my first dragon and earn my shouts! So, I had accumulated around 10 dragon souls and yet, all my shouts were greyed out! I was like OMG what? Why can't I shout? LOL I had to come to the forums to figure out what I was doing wrong. I didn't even read the menu items below the shouts.
Big, big D'OH moment LOL

I was over-encumbered with like 200 extra lbs. of weight... walking of course, and on my way to Windhelm from Riften. I was passing by those barren lands just south of Windhelm and I noticed a dragon flying around Bonestrewn Crest or whatever it's called... Dragons were my thing, every game I'd ever played... If there were dragons, I made peace with them, or spit them upon my (Insert Weapon Here). So feeling strong and indestructable, I walked on over to Bonestrewn Crest and engaged the dragon, using my bow I didn't need to move too much, but I accidentally stumbled into the Giant's camp by the road there, at the same time that a saber-cat thought he'd make a grab at something in the Giant's camp, maybe that Nord idiot with the bow...
In the end: Dragon, Giant, Saber-cat, Mammoth, and a Skeever (don't ask me where he came in), were all coming at me and I figured... I can handle this, just let me get a little distance... ... ... I'd forgotten I was overweight.

Basically anytime I am in a dark dungeon and spend 20 minutes retracing my steps to find that one lever or chain hanging from the wall in the dark corner that I didn't see. D'oh!

Oh, and when I saved over my highest level character. I was Lvl. 46, finally on my way to finishing the main quest when I thought I would mess around on an alternate. The thing was I had been saving via F5 for the last 2 weeks outta laziness. When I hit F5 on my Alt I immediately realized what I had done.... so much wasted time. XD

Now I gotta start over, hahah. Oh well, almost 140 hours right now and I still haven't beaten Alduin.

In RL i'm a klutz, apparently this phenomenon has spread to my character. I can't help but peek over mountain cliffs and buildings to get a view of whatever. Why in the name of Talos I think I have to take just one more tiny step just to see a wee bit more. And kerplunk I go barreling down mountains, waterfalls and buildings. Least once in every play session I do this to my poor characters.

When Balgruuf's advisor said something like "Capable as he may be, I don't see any sign that our friend here is this Dragonborn" and I shouted "Fus" into his face, and all of Dragonreach went hostile on me. Not my brightest moment.

OMG Sindinista!!!!!!!!! Ouch! That's why I create hard saves every 20 minutes! LOL I have over 1500 saved games (well not all on my system, I delete them ever so often lol)

I hardly use quick save anymore, since I got burned once with it. I quick saved my game, just before it crashes, but the save must not have taken, since I had to start my game from a previous save (few hours old -.-). From that moment on, I started to use hard saves lol

But hahahaha I sooooo know what you mean about looking for these levers... been there, done that!

LOLOL you all crack me up! I used my Whirlwind Sprint shout in Whiterun and people were all in awe of me! That's the voice of the Dragonborn. Even got a message from a secret admire, telling me to go check out some burrow, find the power within.

Anyway, so I forgot that during my travel I had switched to FUS RO DAH and thought I sprint down the hill... well, I blew away a guard and the whole market place was in arms. -.- Needles to say, I had to re-load an auto save hahaha

I found this chick in a dungeon that wanted help killing some zombie guy and he was really hard and I had him down to like 1 hp and she died. I felt really bad and loaded my save so I could kill him and keep her alive. After an arduous battle, I killed him just as he struck her down once more. I despaired for a minute that I had failed, and just then she got up. I realized that she only gets knocked unconscious and I did it over for nothing lol

also forgetting I have whirlwind sprint equipped and not unrelenting force, and leaping to my doom instead of throwing my enemies off of the cliff

Oh yes, the classic misplaced shout or the "Fus Ro D'Oh!"

It reminds of when I was a low level novice and only had Fus. I was in Whiterun and going up the path from the gate toward Belethor's Goods and all of a sudden I hear: "Well met, kinsman!". I stop and look to my right and it's none other than Jon Battleborn leaning against a wooden column. But, instead of conversing with him I decided to shout "FUS!" in his face and watch him stumble. It's cool though, Jon Battleborn and I are good friends now.

Awesome stories guys, keep them coming!

I did the battle cry power while clearing out a cave. Little did I know, there was one of those hanging lantern traps above me, and the force made it fall down. Self-immolation...

Sprinting (Alt button) away from a giant while being attacked by a frost dragon. I was low on health, so I hit the 'Tab' key to grab a potion, when the screen went black, then to my desktop. WTF? Another crash? Ohhh, wait, I just Alt-Tabbed myself right out of the game.

When, after about 300 hours (half of it, though, was while the game was paused and minimized), I learned how to pick up items and corpses like in Oblivion.

I guess my `doh` moment was when I had to climb that mountain to get to the Monastery to discover more about my `shout` ability. I just set up the mountain. I tried dozens of ways to get to it and ended up in all kinds of situations and even dangling on the tip of the cliffs or finding new creatures to fight, etc... I was up and around that mountain for literally two days REAL TIME (I don`t FT). I was like, "how the heck do i get to this damned place?`

Then I discovered there were simple steps that led all the way there from the bottom by a bridge.

DOH!

I was out exploring and could see the dragon wall icon on my map but couldn't figure out how to get to it. I finally hopped / climbed my way up over a ridge and it - along with a sleeping dragon - was right below me. Instead of backing up to go around the proper way, I hit forward and fell off the ridge landing right on the dragon.

I think my favorite "are you freakin kidding me?!" moment was loading from fast travel on the bridge at the college just in time to be crispy fried by an attacking dragon.
