Fear of getting older.

Post » Sat Jun 25, 2011 8:14 am

Pfft, I can't wait until I'm that old codger on my porch yelling at young whippersnappers and talking to myself about how when I was young kids were more respectful of their elders.

I already do that on these forums - and it's great!!! The fear of getting older goes away with age. ;)

Life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone.
If you let that thrill leave, that is.
Its all mental. I just consider it another chapter. another season. another challege..
I have a daughter thats 7, and one thing (that would sem obvious) she has taught me is that people continue changing, throughout life.
I think that keeps me on my toes.
Bring it old man time!

Oh boy, yeah, if you start worrying about getting old at 21, yeah you're going to age fast. [censored], I'm 31 : should I put myself to bed with a shovel already ? Nice ! ;)

It's not a problem of how much time you have, it's what you do with it. Anyway, time's about perception : if you project yourself constantly in the future, it'll fly ; feel every second, it'll slow down. Anyone who's been stuck in a line knows it's true. :P

Worrying about time is a bit like being a miser : you fear to lose, but you never get to actually enjoy what you have. Just teach yourself to focus on everything you do. Besides, it'll take your mind off the anxiety. As anything, it's a matter of habit : train your brain.

Ah, to think I skipped the que. I'm all ready for the coffin at age 20 with a likelihood of death by 30-40 ish. If my score shows up negative then it's like I gained 40 years. Hahahaha. Also there's the fact that you can be hit by a car in the next few minutes or anything else you can't know about. Everyone's going to die someday.

Think about it like this, you won't die of old age anyways. Which is true more than 99,99% of the time.

Don't worry about it, consumer-level cybernetic enhancements will probably be within your reach at some point.

You'll feel it even more when you turn 22. 21 is a milestone... sort of like the peak of youth. Once you're over that peak and turn 22 you know that you're on your way to the next big milestone - 30.

The main thing that worries me is my reactions slowing. I'm dreading the day when I can't go and play any FPS game online and be the best pretty much instantly. I mean, imagine that feeling,,, no matter how much you play a game, you'll always be a noob because your reactions have slown down that much. That, for me, is the definition of becoming old.

I know we all feel this way eventually, but I'm starting to feel this way and I'm only 21. It's all going by so quickly, I mean, only 7 years ago I was a freshman in high school. Damn, a freshman.

The biggest thing I'm scared about is that when I'm older I just won't be able to do the things I can do right now. I'm a scholarship athlete, but I'm scared that when I'm 35 I'll lose it all, the the ability to do things like I can right now. I'm scared of losing the youth in my face and the way I look. And, that when I'm older, I'll be like those weird old guys that told me to stop messing around that I hated when I was younger.

How do you deal with such fears? What do I think about? I seriously need to stop, but it makes me concerned and worried all the time.

How do you guys think I feel? I am turning 22 in 6 days. I literally have no more birthdays to really feel like change is happening. Nope. I am just going to get older and older until certain things don't work right anymore and you go to the doctor ever two months. Its all downhill from here man! Get ready! :P

There are probably more important things to worry about.

Anyway, OP, you might grow out of it.

Nope. I've already traded my good eyesight for years of gaming, and my hearing for music.

As long as i'm still capable of being the best at every game I play, i'm still young. :bunny:

While you wont stay at peak condition for sports like you were in high school I'm told you really don't slow down physically (if you make an effort to stay active) until you pass 60. My mom bragged that she could turn out the same amount of work around the house and in the yard at 55 that she could at 25.

Look at it this way:

You got another 50-60 years to live (maybe more if you play your cards right) 3,000 years to live.

Makes that puny 7 years talk look insignificant doesn't it?

Feel better?

thats what is happening to my brother's friends. One of them told me that when he was 14, he couldn't wait until they got their permit. When he got their permit, he could wait to get their licence. When he was 17 he couldn't wait until he turned 18 so he could buy tobacco, and when he turned 18 he couldn't wait until he was 1 so he could drink legally. Now that he is 21, there isn't anything he is looking forward to since he isn't a family man. It may be that you ran out of things to look forward to?? So try to set something to look forward to in the far future?

Are you kidding me? I can't wait for that senior citizens discount at Dennys!

You're only as old as you feel. I'm going on 31 and I'm honestly healthier than I've ever been. Eat your greens, do a bit of exercise regularly and you'll be healthy for a very long time. I don't expect to die until... well, I don't expect to die.

I don't have a fear of getting older, I have a fear of wanting to do so much, but so little time. I would love to have a life support system like Mr. House's in New Vegas. Fill a computer with multiple softwares of encyclopedias and etc. I could be a genius and help the world in my own way. It's a shame that our lives are so short. I'd love to live to 200+ like House. To live so long and preserver the past in all it's glory, that'd be a dream come true for me.

Or it could be a nightmare as you watch the world work against you, slowly becoming something you despise, but your powerless to stop it.

I think of it as leveling up. Hmm, where should I put my attribute points this year? Ooh, a 5x multiplier, nice!

Only you get weaker as you level up past a certain level.

Im 18 soon, no idea what todo with my life, but im just looking at places I want to see in the world before I die, today I found out about http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Prismatic_Spring thats a place I have got to visit, to see for myself. Just make a list of things to see/do and try to do as many of those as you can.

That poor fool, that's the downside of meritocracy. His first point he makes is depressing because he has no idea about anything.
