Feature I think is missing, new map updates highlighted..

Post » Sat Jun 16, 2012 5:31 pm

You know, recently I've been noticing how many times that my map gets updated just by hearing something as I pass by a conversation, or people coming up to you talking about something that adds a marker to your map, the problem with that is, after the first few levels, you have so much stuff on your map, how are you expected to know what was added and follow up? That's why I am hoping they can implement, at least by TES VI a new map feature where newly added map markers are some how highlighted and easy to find. It's not a huge issue, but it seems like this is something that wouldn't be too hard for the programmers to add and it would make their current system make more sense.

Yes I noticed this. Although I rarely go straight out to search the area added. As you said perhaps in the next ES.

If any such thing should be added, they should make it optional. Most players complain of the markers we have already, ruins immersion or something.

This is a good idea. I use a mod that removes all map markers on my map. I do it not so much for immersion as because the overly-large, black-and-white markers are ugly and obscure my view of the map the way highway billboards obscure a wonderful scenic view.

Great idea, and also bring back more visible roads. So hard to see the roads on the map in Skyrim..

This could also be fixed by improving the journal feature, or allowing the player to add notes to the map/journal (I know, I know, I can keep a notebook handy - I do. It's not a deal breaker, but something I sincerely loved about Morrowind (notes feature) and Oblivion (more detailed journal)).

I will say, I like that it notes if you've cleared a dungeon or cave, so I can tell at a glance if I've been in something or not.

Well undiscovered locations on the map are slightly different looking (usually darker). I don't think highlighting them would do anything different than the feature that is already in the game except making them easier to notice. Instead I think they should make a log book telling you that you overheard the conversation that revealed the location. That way you know exactly what location was added.

I have read a lot recently where people are trying to get things removed from the game completely, I'm glad to see that you at least think it should be optional.

Absolutely! :P
Sometimes I play my vampire mage very RP-style. No checkin' the map, sleeping, eating etc.

Sometimes I wanna kill everything in a 20mile radius and not walk back? o.o

It doesn't need a new map icon. It simply needs to add the name of the location in the message:

"Map updated with So and So Cave"

Yeah I have a problem with when it's supposed to say a cave or something is cleared and then it doesn't say it.

But just by walking past it it changes to white... even if you didn't go inside.

Yes, what is needed is a real journal:
"So-and-so told me about a strange beast in Bloody-Guts Cavern, just east of Whiterun".

Morrowind had this.

form and style, equally important, imo. if they don't already have one, bethesda needs to get a new production designer or art director, someone to help with the aesthetics of their games. i will say, they have gotten better over time.
