My feelings on Fallout New Vegas.

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 10:14 pm

I just registered to voice my opinion on Fallout NV.

While the game has been a brilliant experience, the constant lockups and freezing, quests not triggering and the general unfinished feel of the game has left me with a bitter sense of being ripped off. How on earth this was released while so obviously broken is little more than staggering. To add DLC before patching this up to a workable condition is unforgivable, I won't be buying the DLC... in fact I'm trading in the game like a few of my mates have already done (2 xbox 360 versions and my PS3 game.) Shame on you Obsidian for not holding back long enough to have this in a fit state. The game had so much potential, the missions are so much better than FO3 and the world just felt so more solid, how on earth you threw this out of the door in a state where I can't get more than an hour or so before a total lock up is shocking.

I expect this to be deleted simply because I can't really see any other unhappy customers here, but I still wanted to give my view. I won't be buying another Obsidian game until months after release simply so I have a fighting chance of y'know being able to play it.

i'm pretty [censored] unhappy, I paid 140 bucks for the CE game and guide, yet I'm still trying to play it, and help others with the freezing issues. everyone is pissed, it's not necessary to start 16 different posts that all say the same thing:" I'm not happy."

I feel the same way OP. I would have rather seen them push the game back a month or two then me not be able to finish the BoS quest. Basically I'm going to have to wait for my second full play though for the game to even work correctly.

:) We must be looking at a different forum, then...

As a Moderator, one of my primary jobs is to try and keep things organized on these forums. Which means that we do lock duplicate topics, and try to keep "overall complaints" in one thread (because otherwise they have a tendency of pushing the "bug report" topics off the first couple of pages.) As ostensibly, this sub-forum is for people to post their specific issues, and find answers (and possible solutions) to those problems - more than one thread of this nature just makes things harder for those members looking here for help.

This thread seems to be going civilly for the moment, so I don't see any reason to delete or lock it. So long as it follow the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1120447-important-forum-information/, there's no reason for Moderator intervention.

Correct; I do see it as a problem unless someone is Spamming the sites over and over. I see this as a learning opportunity for both the developer as well as the tester.

I'm from the UK.......went into a Computer game store this weekend....there were copies of Fallout New Vegas basically on their way to the bargain bin for £19.99.
I paid £36.00+ for my copy when it came out. Seems the word is getting round around that the game has problems. This happened to Neverwinter Nights 2
another game that ended up in the bargain bin within weeks of release. The common denominator to this is that both these games were follow ups of great games
and were given the Obsidian makeover. :brokencomputer:

To be fair, we know that Zenimax/Obsidian/Bethesda can put out quality games. What likely perpetrated this mess was some suit in the food chain who understands release dates, but doesn't understand QA. The bugs/freezing issues in this game are so pervasive, there's no way they snuck through all the testing. In any case, if this game ends up in the dustbin of history, rightfully so... it's a technical disaster. And I hope on some small level I contributed to it by trading my copy in the day I managed to limp through the last main story quest. It made be nervous even running the thing in my PS3, that many hard resets can't be good for it.

In any case, I think the game had good sales, so there'll probably be a Fallout: Different City, but I'll be damned if I buy it new. This publisher will get no more money from me on this series, it's one of the rare occasions where I'd rather buy it used and have EB get the lion's share of the profit.

Actually, people should make more posts so that Obsidian can pull their heads out of their asses and never make a mistake like this again. I was looking forward to Fallout New Vegas prior to it's release, I got the game, played it for an hour. Freeze. I ended up having to start over. Anyways, I've put about 100 hours into this game, but I'm about ready to either put it on the shelves until it's in some kind of workable state, or sell it.

Also, don't act better than everyone else. I realize that your trying to help others, but the way you said it made it seem like your trying to be better than he is. There is a legitimate reason to be upset here. This could've been avoided if Bethesda and Obsidian weren't such cheap skates.

Well said about the cheap skate bit. Every company does that now though the quality of damn near anything is terrible these days if everyone would just quit buying from the terrible conglomerate companies and buy from the little ones that still make good stuff the larger companies would loose money and fall back into trying to make quality stuff again (My theory anyway). uhhh funny example but none the less everybody is familiar with goldfish snack crackers well I tell ya what the generic wales taste a hell of a lot better and hey they're cheaper to boot. We could do the same thing with video games only buy from the game developers that don't ship out broken games like rockstar for instance gta4 and RDR are big games and I've spent about as much time on Fo3 and NV between them and I've had zero crashes but with Fo3 and NV well you now the rest I'd bet(Oblivion was broken too but it worked alright for me). Alright then thank you for your time ladies and gents I'm out.

Have a Merry Christmas everyone and I hope none of you get FO:NV for Christmas. boy am I going to regret this if they fix this broken product doubt it though!

Like many folk I've had ENOUGH of this piece of junk masquerading as a game...I've had over 9 crashes on my PS3 (slim model not that it should matter) & the damn thing freezes constantly...the updates did nothing (in fact , no it made things worse) it's really not a pleasurable gaming experience & one that I will no longer play through fear of it actually trashing my hardware...I'm not interested in workarounds (though believe me I have tried...to no avail) I paid FULL price for a product that I would expect to be "fit for purpose" (that's UK law...I'll expand on this later)...to even trade this broken mess I would lose more than 75% of what I paid (as just a week after release news spread fast & all stores have put it where it belongs in the (bargain) bin...customer service is shocking with no follow up worth salt...they claim there is "no issues with the product" (so the patch to "fix" over 200 issues was for what then?...this dear Bethesda will help me get my money back from you!).
That's correct folks I want my money back every penny I paid in FULL & I will get it...how you may wonder?...read on: In the UK we have what is know as Consumer Law within this law is a portion re: goods fit for purpose I quote:

"Satisfactory quality is defined as what a ‘reasonable person’ would regard as acceptable, and takes into account factors such as price paid, fitness for purpose specified, appearance and finish, freedom from minor blemishes, safety and durability. If it becomes apparent that an item is not of the quality you were led to expect, you were not aware of any such defect when you bought it, and you bought from a seller acting ‘in the course of a business’ (i.e. not an informal sale), you are quite within your rights to go back to the retailer or manufacturer, even after some months of use. If a product develops a fault within the first 6 months, the assumption will be that this defect was present at the time of purchase and you will not have to prove anything. If you are returning an item after this 6 month time period, this automatic assumption does not apply, and it may be up to you to prove the fault did not occur through misuse. You should also consider aspect of durability and acceptance.

We have in the UK small claims courts...I pay a small fee (£30) & the court requests a representative from whomever I'm claiming against...if no representative turns up the court will find in my favour (I receive my £30 court fee back & the money I'm claiming...the company foot the bill to the court) we don't need expensive lawyers to do this...you can only do this with a UK company but seeing as they have UK offices that is good enough...I encourage anyone else in the UK to do the same & show these greedy sods that it's not on to fob consumers off with broken product...below you'll find the UK address to make your claim against Bethesda:

how was I trying to act better than him? he was saying that he was the only one unhappy with it, and that everyone else was okay with getting ripped off. what I put was simply an example of how angry I am, and yet still trying to make it work and make it work for other people. if you and him want to think that makes me somehow "better", go ahead...

and no, obsidian AND Bethesda don't give a [censored] about how many posts there are saying that people are unhappy. they really don't. they wouldn't have released the game in this condition, they already did it with fallout 3, and new Vegas is only worse. skyrim will use their new engine and Gamebryo is for sale. they are doing things the way THEY want to. the way that makes them more money.

I'd like to first say that I love the Fallout games and your programmers must go through hell trying to make this game. I beat the game on XBOX360 with very few problems (mostly because I followed the main quest more than I did the sides). I was playing on my friends XBOX so of course I wasn't gonna slowly take the time to do everything knowing I didn't have much time to do it with ease.

I bought the PS3 version for christmas and decided to slowly take my time and do all I can in the game. It has been a nightmare so far for me. With some quests just not doable due to console automatically freezing (mainly refering to Boones quest). (just do add Yes I did make sure I got all the updates thus far) I personally find the PS3 version almost unplayable due to its issues. I took a break from it and decided I'll go back again and the game just randomly froze again with me being on the game for less than an hour. I hope you guys can at least get the major problems out of the way. I am perfectly fine with the occasional freeze for a game like this just can't be flawless there is far too much that you can do. It is just obnoxious when the game freezes 3 times in one sitting. I hope that next patch will be out soon so I can continue my save.

I am certainly not trying to sound like a whiner in this post and sorry if I do. It is quite a tease beating this on XBOX then having the game freeze constantly on PS3 when you want to collect all the companions and Power Fist some Fiends heads off! :D

Hmm, I think the Sale of Goods Act (specifically 'fit for purpose') give you rights against the seller

If you're not satisfied that something is fit for purpose, then I believe that your claim should be against whoever sold you the product.

This is the case for any consumer product. People are sometimes fobbed off by stores saying it's not their responsibility, it's the manufacturer's, but the law says it's whoever sold you the item. I don't see why software should be any different.

See http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/HMCSCourtFinder/GetLeaflet.do?court_leaflets_id=183
It also says the 'court normally expects you and the defendant to take a number of steps to try to settle the dispute' - again, I think this is you and the seller.

You should also read this if you haven't seen it: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=281679

Speaking in a recent interview, Joint Lead Officer Sylvia Rook from the Trading Standards Institute said: "When consumers buy goods their rights are always against the retailer, so if there is a problem with a game, the consumer should return it to the retailer.

Anyway, let us know how you get on.

The day I see an actual developer staff (NOT a forum monitor, not some random guy pulling web-searches and pasting them in forums) reply directly to a post of mine or your posts (Fellow forum members) is the day I will believe they DO care what players think of their games, and are genuinely concerned/working on bugs/game play. I've heard excuses that "making games multi-platform creates complications", I'm sure this is true from a programing point of view, but is it really a valid excuse? These guys are supposed to be pro's in the business, and one's you count on for quality. I've seen a few posts saying making a game that can be released on several consoles and PC makes it all that much more complicated. I don't really buy that excuse though, nor rushing to release a product by a certain date.

I'd hate to see games such as this with great potential and an awesome beginning (The old Fallout's were epic) die because of today's low standards.... It's killing the game's reputation somewhat indirectly: New players will always remember "oh yeah, that one game that everyone WANTED to play, but couldn't."

Small P.S.:
Just so I don't get yelled at: Not that I don't appreciate people who do a lot of research and post fantastic information for us on here, or provide resources such as the Vault, I'd simply like to see actual developer teams who actually wrote and coded the game answer here in forums more often. IMHO it should be part of their jobs.

I would love to see that also personally. It is nice to know that the creators actually give a damn about their customers feedback on the game. This game was certainly released before it was ready to be played and the PS3 version has to have the most bugs in this game of the three consoles. I hope the next patch comes out soon I am eagerly waiting for it.

The Guardian's website (UK newspaper) recently said they were going to be interviewing Obsidian about F: NV, and asked for questions they could put to them - a number of people, including myself, said they must ask them about all the bugs!

I'm not sure when the article will appear, but it could make interesting reading ...

I'm not quite sure where the problems may actually lie in the teams that developed New Vegas, but somebody in QA Testing or Programming definitely needs to be fired, and then shot...with an orbital laser. XD

Like countless others have said I absolutely adore New Vegas when it's actually working but all the issues it has are a constant nuisance, I appreciate that in open world games like FO and ES so many different things interact with each other and can go horribly horribly wrong... a lot. But I can't fathom how some of the errors that do occur can slip through game testing especially when they're as common an occurrence as they seem to be, I know not everyone will bump into all the problems that are available and sure a few can go unnoticed during testing but the bugs are so numerous and prominent in NV that I find it hard to believe the game was adequately tested before release. Many others feel the same yet somehow people still buy these games at launch. I was never actually going to buy New Vegas because I knew it would be a mess, it was given to me as a birthday present and like I've said previously I love it when it's working, but it's when its causing me to constantly reset my PS3 that I start to feel my patience wearing thin.

I love Bethesda's games and I'm still sinking countless hours into Oblivion even after all this time, but by god do I hate some of their staff for the apparent laziness of some of them.

New Vegas is a game that should be considered for every single Game of the Year list out there but isn't because of the absolutely pathetically abysmal technical state that it shipped in and even now, post-patching, still remains in.

I think that that says it all.

Obsidian, once again, has snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and I don't see that fatal flaw in their development process changing any time soon. (prove me wrong..oh please, for once, after years and years prove me wrong!)

I don't know about you guys, but I was one of the svckers who preordered and bought it on release day without reading reviews. If you REALLY want to teach them lesson, then stop buying their games. It's really as simple as that.

Return to Fallout: New Vegas
