A few questions about Android phones

Post » Mon Jun 13, 2011 3:46 pm

Ok guys so recently I got my phone uprgaded and decided I wanted to get a smart phone, after checking them out online for awhile I decided that the droid incredible was the best one for me, so I went out and got one. Now I've never had a phone like this before so I decided I would read through the manual to try and learn everything about it that i could, only problem was there was absolutely NO information on how to use the phone in the thing whatsoever, it literally didn't even tell you how to turn the thing on or off. Well I bought the phone at walmart, because it was like 100 dollars les there than anywhere else, so I thought that maybe I could take it back there and they could show me how to use it, nope every question I asked was met with "durr I dunno." Seriously if you people are going to sell something at least know a little bit about it. I cant find anything online like a instruction manual or anything like that so i still have no idea what im doing, so I thought that maybe some of yall here on the forum might could help me out just a little bit.

-What exactly does sync do? I un-synced everything and it seems to have helped a lot on saving the battery life but im wondering if im losing out on anything by not haing it on.

-What can I do to save more on the battery? I already got task killer and juice defender installed on it but is there anything else that can be done to give me a longer battery life? PLEASE HELP WITH THIS ONE THE BATTERY DIES ALL THE TIME AND I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO!!

-Is it possible to delete a email account off a phone after it has been installed? And if not does having on there drain the battery or is it really no affecting it in anyway?

-What the hell is background data? Seriously thats something eles I turned off and its helping with the battery but aside from not being able to get on the market without turning back on I cant see that its really doing anything.

-Where can I go online to get answers to more questions like this? I've looked everywhere but I cant find anything anywhere.

Thats all I can think of for now yall, thanks in advance for any advice.

Im actually posting from my htc evo android phone. Sync saves all your stuff to your desktop(contacts etc).

What kind of phone is it? I know htc has the "htc sense" setup.

Also on the new droid os task killers kill your battery faster since the os has one in the background.

1. Sync will either sync to your google account or your desktop (most likely your google account unless it's a third-party app). Sync uses wifi/3G, which drains your battery.

2. Task killers are bad and you are better off avoiding them.

4. background data is any data your phone gets/sends in the background. For example: weather info or new emails.

HTC Incredible, the first one not the second one. About the background data I still get weather updates though and im still getting emails, so does having it turned off just make it go slower or what?

Just go to androidforums.com. It really, really, shouldn't be that difficult to find answers to a lot of these questions on that forum.

Having background data off will slow down your email access, but just barely. That's because instead of having the emails already loaded into your mail app (done in the background), you have to send a wifi/3G signal to download those same emails, and then wait for them to arrive. After that, it's the same deal with either method - you can still read emails without background data.

Another thing background data can do that is beneficial is notifications on new emails, news and other such items. It helps you keep in touch faster. If you don't see it as important, then by all means keep it off.

It may be, though, that you'll never see the battery life that you'd like. Smartphones drain battery a lot faster than most regular phones with moderate use, and it's not the apps or the background data doing it - it's the screen. Bigger screens are bigger hogs, so a 4.3 incher really svcks the juice. I've found that I need to plug in my phone most (not quite all) nights to recharge anyway. And that's fairly normal.

Thanks a lot, thats exactly the explanation I've been waiting for about the background data, appreciate it man. :foodndrink: And I've just about got the battery life up now to where I only have to charge it onece every two days, big step up from when I first bought the phone and the battery was dying every six hours.

Now about sync, does it just make it to where you can be logged onto a facebook or google account on your laptop/pc and phone at the same time, or is it something different?

Actually Sync only saves contacts and nothing more. It automatically updates or Syncs at a certain time. It backs up all your contacts to the server as well as your desktop. Although it only saves to your desktop when connected via a USB cable.

Task killers aren't necessarily "bad" but, check your pre-installed apps as you may already have a task killer installed. Verizon likes to use "something" office; replace "something" with whatever name Verizon uses. In regards to system apps that you "kill" they automatically restart anyway.

Things that will kill your battery's quickly are having wifi on, location on and Bluetooth on. There is or should be a widget You can open that shows the symbol for each of those "programs". Turn them off when not in use.

You can also download a battery booster that will automatically turn apps off that aren't in use.

I do 90% of my web surfing from my Android powered LG Ally (horrible phone BTW but it was cheap at the time I bought it.)
