Fighting Deathclaws not very fun

Post » Sun Mar 06, 2011 9:02 am

I don't know, the one Deathclaw I actually fought was kind of fun, if you enjoy that sort of thing. It took out ED-E, then Veronica, and then came after me. I was scrambling away and killed it with just one sliver of HP left.

I cleared out the Quarry mostly using my sniper rifle, then I was grabbing eggs and got over-encumbered. A single deathclaw ambushed me and killed me, after I had just killed about 10-12 of his friends. Sigh.

Deathclaws are supposed to be some of the most feared creatures in the wasteland, but defeating them doesn't prove to be much of a thrill since it usually just involves finding a cheap spot with an anti-material rifle. I think Obsidian should've tried harder to make fighting them more exciting. I haven't had much time to brain storm, but I think one way they could've done this is to make them(and their lunge attack) slower, so that it's possible to dodge, but given them a super-jump and/or wall climb ability to discourage AMR camping.

Thoughts?

They're a HECK of a lot tougher than in FO3. At the lower levels, I immediatly crafted a dart gun so I could shoot them in the legs and laugh at them as I pepper them to death with my low guns rating while running circles around their limping gait.

At the higher levels, I'd pop 'em in the face with terrible shotgun or run away and drop one of my 20 bottlecap mines in my wake and watch them die. There was also nuka grenades, or the special Chinese assault rifle.

I can kill 'em with high guns and the right equipment in FONV but I can't be so cavalier about it. So no, I don't get what you're saying.

i find killing death clawss with my amr fun, i have minimal sneak so i get the joys of haveing to snipe them from miles away so they cant see me. and even with an amr/normal ammo death claws have a fighting chance, switch to AP rounds and of course they are gonna be easy.

Don't you mean hallow points? I thought armor piercing rounds do LESS damage but are more effective at getting through armor.

Deathclaws have armor, so using Hollow Points is kind of a bad idea against them unless it's a particularly high damage weapon already.

If you want to make it easy for yourself and shoot them with one of the most powerful rifles in the game from far away then do so.
If you want them to be a challenge try fighting them in close-combat. (Unarmed character for the win! I took down the Alpha an hour ago and man did I feel like I accomplished something! (Did not use VATS))

In FO3 you just go VATS and blow their head off with a HUNTING RIFLE.

At least in NV they are scary, and for those who need to spend clip after clip on them: try AP rounds or Hand Loader rounds.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't realize they were considered "armored".

I still don't get how anyone could say they were harder to kill in FO3. The only things I found remotely tough in that game were Overlords and Reavers. Everything else was a meat sheild even on very hard.

Does your character have the paralyzing palm perk?

This machine and hand loaded rounds allows my character to have stand up fights against Deathclaws(no sneak attacks). I would still recommend finding high ground and thinning the herd so to speak before walking into one of their camps like Clint Eastwood.

No, the perk required me to not have power fist, zap glove or displacer glove so I didn't bother taking it.
And I don't use VATS so much either so it wasn't a perk especially needed for my character.

Why in the world do people use AP ammo with the AMR..... it does over 100 damage so you only get 10 damage bonus at most from that, while hand load ammo gives more than 15 damage bonus as well as increasing hit chance....... oh the humanity of it all!

Paralyzing Palm only works in VATS.

I just hate how ineffective explosives are on deathclaws. I used a sneak attack from Annabelle followed with some bottle cap mines and plasma grenades and still barely kill them..... so expensive :(

Ah, I see. IIRC paralyzing palm still worked even if an "unarmed" weapon was used in FO3. I was curious to see if that was still the case in FONV...

well in fallout 3 i didnt really mind them because they where easy enough to kill and mostly 1 at the time.

but in fallout new vegas i wouldnt mind 1 at the time but now if you attack a dc their will suddenly be about 5 more and they kill you in 4 hits or so and that svcks

If you're on the PC, try one of the explosives re-balancing mods. The devs went overboard on nerfing explosives in NV, even worse then they were in Fallout 3 (where I didn't feel they were deadly enough). Nothing should survive a point-blank Mini-Nuke blast. A near miss, yes, but not point-blank, you're now glowing with radiation, range.

According to the strat guide PP does work with an unarmed weapon. It says "Fully unarmed" really means "Unarmed weapon"... so Ive been hesitating on getting it since my P.I. only uses brass knuckles.

Yes, just like in the previous games, Paralyze Palm works with any unarmed weapon.

I guess, but trying your hardest should already be fun, without me having to come up with my own challenges :\

If a sneak attack critical hit to the head from an AMR didn't take down a deathclaw, it be to overpowered to face any other way. Unlike most games Fallout greatly rewards stealth without making it an absolute requirement.

Lets think about this to battle deathclaws we use stealth, high vantage points, and a big *&)*%#) gun. Why are we so careful when fighting a deathclaw why don't we charge right in and beat it down with a machinegun or a melee weapon like any other creature? Because we know a deathclaw can quickly rip you to pieces.
If they weren't the baddest mother *)*%)*% in the wasteland we wouldn't go to all the trouble to cheap shot them whenever possible and avoid a stand up fight.

I think it was harder to kill Deathclaws in Fallout 3. Maybe it was because the max level was 20, but in order to 1-shot kill a Deathclaw in Fallout 3, I had to use Psycho, and manually aim at the head. I don't think VATS allowed you to have a 95% accuracy at the head from long range. So if you missed, you would be dead meat because the Deathclaw would be alerted to your presence. I think maybe that's the kind of difficulty the OP was looking for.

Yes it allowed 95% to the head, the %%% were much higher in FO3 overall you never got the sniper perk did you? Killing a deathclaw in one hit was quite easy, same way as now, sneak attack critical to the head with a high powered rifle, as VATs was much more potent you could safely do this from close range.

You can not make anything more exciting with this concept and this engine. Fire, backpedal, keep firing, hope their health bar reaches zero before yours.

I did that at the Deathclaw Promontory just across the river, though it was about four or five deathclaws, a lightmachine gun with AP rounds and some psycho. After that I went back up there and proceeded to kill the remaining two dozen deathclaws.

Well, since you say they can be killed with a very powerful weapon that one would not expect to aquire until a high level, and would have to have the requisite skills and stats to use, then the Deathclaws are just about what they should be.

^

Besides I love the feeling of deathclaw duckhunting from the conveyor belt in the Quarry.

Sometimes I use myself as bait and have veronica equipped with the Q53 PR and EDE zapping the mother deathclaw.

Oh yeah.
