My main inspiration this time is a movie I've just seen: Lake Mungo. It's hard for me to find the right words to describe just exactly how much this movie disturbed me. It's been half an hour and I still cannot shake the uneasiness. It's one of those documentary types, with a lot of "found footage" stuff. It does it better than, well, any other film similar to it, in my opinion. I've seen and loved Paranormal Activity and Blair Witch Project, and so desperately wanted a movie like them.
So of course, I looked online and saw Lake Mungo in a "Best ghost movies" list. Naturally, I was interested, and got around to it as soon as I could. My god, I am not disappointed. It's really hard to scare me with blood and guts (Hence why I don't watch those types often), and many movies that claim to be (or claimed to be by others) null and void of cheap jump scares often have several anyway. This is why I've taken such a liking to paranormal films, especially low budget and in "found footage" or documentary style.
This had none. Even Paranormal Activity and Blair Witch had their "Boo!" moments, but this film in particular just...It gave off this feeling that made my hair stand on end. There is one scene in the entire movie that could make somebody jump out of their seat, but not because it's sudden; it's the very thing I saw on screen that made me reel back and nearly scream. To actually invoke a response like that from me with an image is truly remarkable. I've seen some creepy stuff before, and while it wasn't traumatizing, it was in the context of the story that made it so frightening.
I know I'm raving a bit too much, but this film was inconceivably scary to me, and easily tops Paranormal Activity in the creepy department. It's not very much like that movie, however, so those who disliked it would still potentially like Lake Mungo. And fans of movies like Activity...well, this is the most enthusiastic recommendation I've ever given.
So, I'd also like to read about similar experiences you've all had, either with films or even books and stories posted on the 'net. Anything that creeped you out so bad that it lingered in your mind long afterwards, and sometimes still think about it. It doesn't even have to be specifically in the horror genre, though most answers will likely come from it. I find it very fun seeing what really gets to different people, and it also helps me to locate other things I'd like to look into.
