Films and stories that chill you to the bone

Post » Thu Aug 25, 2011 10:44 am

Hello all, welcome to yet another horror-themed thread of mine. I really can't get enough of this stuff.

My main inspiration this time is a movie I've just seen: Lake Mungo. It's hard for me to find the right words to describe just exactly how much this movie disturbed me. It's been half an hour and I still cannot shake the uneasiness. It's one of those documentary types, with a lot of "found footage" stuff. It does it better than, well, any other film similar to it, in my opinion. I've seen and loved Paranormal Activity and Blair Witch Project, and so desperately wanted a movie like them.

So of course, I looked online and saw Lake Mungo in a "Best ghost movies" list. Naturally, I was interested, and got around to it as soon as I could. My god, I am not disappointed. It's really hard to scare me with blood and guts (Hence why I don't watch those types often), and many movies that claim to be (or claimed to be by others) null and void of cheap jump scares often have several anyway. This is why I've taken such a liking to paranormal films, especially low budget and in "found footage" or documentary style.

This had none. Even Paranormal Activity and Blair Witch had their "Boo!" moments, but this film in particular just...It gave off this feeling that made my hair stand on end. There is one scene in the entire movie that could make somebody jump out of their seat, but not because it's sudden; it's the very thing I saw on screen that made me reel back and nearly scream. To actually invoke a response like that from me with an image is truly remarkable. I've seen some creepy stuff before, and while it wasn't traumatizing, it was in the context of the story that made it so frightening.

I know I'm raving a bit too much, but this film was inconceivably scary to me, and easily tops Paranormal Activity in the creepy department. It's not very much like that movie, however, so those who disliked it would still potentially like Lake Mungo. And fans of movies like Activity...well, this is the most enthusiastic recommendation I've ever given.

So, I'd also like to read about similar experiences you've all had, either with films or even books and stories posted on the 'net. Anything that creeped you out so bad that it lingered in your mind long afterwards, and sometimes still think about it. It doesn't even have to be specifically in the horror genre, though most answers will likely come from it. I find it very fun seeing what really gets to different people, and it also helps me to locate other things I'd like to look into.

I think the only book I've ever read, then wanted to read again immediately was Stephen King's "Bag of Bones". It is my all time favorite book. A classical ghost story, written with King's sarcastic wit.

As for movies, the best ghost story I've seen acted out was "The Others", with Nicole Kidman. The twist at the end took my breath away. Best "gotcha" ending ever!

And not exactly a horror or ghost story movie, but more of a suspense movie about witchcraft is "Spellbinder". Another one with a wicked twist at the end.
(You can't find "Spellbinder" any more, except maybe off a torrent feed. Two of the actors later sued to get it off the market. The imagery and story line was realistically demonic.)

Hah, that's one of my all time favorites as well. Not scary in the slightest, IMO, but creepy and, like you said, has a killer plot twist. I just watched that one again recently, as a matter of fact.

I'd like to mention a movie extremely similar to The Others (in style, anyway) called The Orphanage. It's a Mexican horror film that I think far surpasses The Others in scare factor, but I'd say Others still has the better plot.

Spellbinder sounds interesting, but if it's too hard to get a hold of, then I might have to pass.

I copied "Spellbinder" from VHS to DVD. I think I still have the AVI file on my hard drive somewhere. PM me if you're interested in it.

One old movie that got to me was "Evil Dead"... I was about 10 when I saw it for the first time. Years later (around 20), I decided to watch it again, just to see how well it aged... I was impressed, I had that uneasiness while watching it. (Forget about Evil Dead 2, it's corny, Evil Dead 3 is hilarious... if I remember correctly).
Another classic is "Blair Witch Project". I'll never go into the woods alone...
I've read "Amytiville Horror", much more scary than any movies that was made.

Oh, an honorable mention...
"Children of the Corn".

I love that movie, it has one of my favorite lines from any movie. "They want you too, Malachi."

The only movie that's ever really frightened me, in such a way that I couldn't watch it again for years, was Eraserhead.
David Lynch, I don't know what goes on in your head and I don't want to.
Love his movies, though,

It's surreal horror, so there aren't really any jump scares or gore. It just manages to be subtly -but incredibly- unsettling.

I have a bit of a love-hate relationship going on with Marble Hornets, and indeed the Slender Man Mythos in its entirety. It's fascinating to see how widely this myth has caught on, and how invested people are in making it seem convincing. The media itself is often stunningly good. On the other hand, the thought of a waking nightmare -a creature that exists because you believe it does- is as terrifying to me as it is intriguing. Which is to say, a lot.

As far as books go, I heartily recommend House of Leaves (Mark Z. Danielewski). Just don't try and read it all in one go. Trust me on this. Dear god, the headaches I got.

I think Hostel would qualify for me. The movie in it's self is not scary, only lot's of gore which is pretty meh. What gets to me is the concept. While watching it my thoughts was "This could be going on for real somewhere in the world right now" and it sickend me. I think I'll pass if I get another chance to see it.

Lots to read, but you won't regret it. Or maybe you will :cold:

Also, http://brasscockroach.com/h4ll0w33n2007/manga/Amigara-Full/Amigara.html. A comic so it's lighter to read. Or not :cold:

There's all sorts of pastas in there, I can't go through all of then though because I'm a big old puss cat, so I got scared over "Squidwards suicide" (laugh at me once you've read it).
But yeah my list isn't long I don't like horror, it doesn't fit my happy attitude, although the film Shelter creeped me out (soul svcking FTW).

The movie. I am a huge SK fan, and will definitely read the book this school year.

There's a scene where they show the wife's sister. She was so freaky I couldn't finish the movie. She was all green and spiny and writhing!

Alot of people belived the Majoras Mask pasta, caused alot of hype.
Same with the Morrowind jvk1166z.esp mod. Although modder actually de-railed that pasta a short while after, by showing everyone that it was actually a star wars mod for Fallout 3 which just had its name stolen :D.

Its worth looking at BTW for anyone who's curious.
