Final Fantasy 4 Makes No Sense!

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 4:45 am

spoilers maybe. I think 20 years is enough though..anyway.

Things occur which make absolutely no sense. And I'm not talking about the obvious things like "Where exactly were they hiding that giant?" Two things very close together are great examples:

1) Cid's Airship has an auto-pilot/remote control function... This is a world that does not have electricity, or indoor plumbing, whos primary weapons are swords and the like. Oh and the airship's a freaking boat with a helicopter blade.

2) After defeating Golbez in the dwarven crystal room, he bursts into flames..and then declares that he cannot perish, at which point his arm suddenly becomes a crawling claw, which works its way to the crystal, grabs it, and teleports away.

....And it is never ever brought up again. Or acknowledged at the time. Theres nowhere else in the game or in the game's lore that shows this happening. Its only this one time. And Golbez isnt like, some monster -- he's the same species at Cecil, who I must point out does NOT have the ability to turn into a crawling claw upon death.

Oh right and Damcyan somehow has hovercraft. Still no electricity.

WTF weird game.

Square doesn't include logic in the Final Fantasy development process.

A video game that doesn't make perfect sense? Surely you must be joking!

No complain about the civilisation on moon, magic, or giant monsters that don't exist in real world? Yup, flying airship makes no sense.

Was FFIV the one where you went to the moon?

You went to the moon in FFVIII also, if memory serves. But I don't remember much from that game, due to it being mostly [censored].

I remember that bit - there's a cringeworthy scene involving Squall, Rinoa, and some very dodgy Japanese ballad.

Ridiculous story aside though, I quite liked FFVIII.

Perhaps it was supposed to be Golbez's severed arm (think Thing from The Addams Family), or some sort of spell seeing as he uses Black Magic. Maybe Cecil can turn into a giant claw thing and he just chooses not to. Maybe it's a game that's over two decades old and you're reading too much into it.

Psht, nothing wrong with Final Fantasy VIII's story, or a little cheesy romance even.

The romance, man. All the gag-inducing romance, man.

And the junction system which was more broken than the Challenger.

I went through FFVIII for the first time blissfully ignorant as to how the junction system actually worked and as a result my characters were horribly under-powered. How I defeated Ultimecia is beyond me.

For my second playthrough, I stocked up on hundreds of Ultima spells and had a near invincible party. The only remotely challenging bit was fighting Omega weapon - to this day I still think he is one of the toughest optional FF bosses. And you will NEVER EVER find him without a strategy guide...

Omega Weapon was in the Lunar Base, right? Anyway, the level scaling was another cack system. I prefer to forget VIII has ever existed. Even X was better than VIII.

Though I gotta say, Triple Triad was a cool minigame. Oh wait, but then there were all the silly rules you had to reset over and over again to get them right. Nevermind.

He was in Ultimecia's castle at the end. I think Ultimate Weapon was in the lunar base.

I loved Triple Triad. I'd say that game added an extra 30 hours to my save file. I actually got every card in the game (only to turn them all into items at the end - 100 Megalixers for Bahamut card? Yes please).

FFX was silly - with the Monster Arena it was ridiculously easy to get so over-powered that you could kill the final boss with one hit. The Dark Aeons and Penance were cooll though. Never managed to beat Penance. :(

Have't played an FF since X-2 - that game was absolutely horrible.

Triple Triad makes the game even more broken, if you use card mod.

While it may be the easiest game in the series, the story is still my favorite. :hehe:

Indeed. 99 Dark Matters? Why thank you!

But what is the story really? A bunch of orphans go fight a sorceress who, for some reason "compresses time". No thanks, it was an appalling story, and the only thing good about the game was Triple Triad and Hot Mom Edea.

The story is mainly in the character development. If your games must have an overarching plot with a clearly defined antagonist, then I can see how you may not like it.

That's the main reason I like the story of FF8 and find the story of FF7 ridiculous, I prefer the generally more relaxed story instead of the urgent quest to save the world from certain doom.

Compressing space and time with herself at the center, she planned to recreate the universe as she saw fit. Pretty standard villain stuff. Not the most expertly crafted story even by video game standards, but I still found it to be enjoyable. Especially with the cast that the game had, as Narmy said.
