Final Fantasy on the PC

Post » Thu Jun 30, 2011 9:09 pm

I want to try out a Final Fantasy game on the PC. Which one would you recommend? I realise there are loads of FF games.

I'm looking for the most interesting game for someone whose only played the ones on the SNES more than a decade ago and who has forgotten EVERYTHING about them....except that you start out the game inside a robot wandering in the city.

That would be Final Fantasy VI you're talking about

As far as the ones on PC: I believe VII and VIII are the only ones on PC (I could be wrong about VII).

There is also the MMO's FFXI and FFXIV. For now FFXIV is subscription free but I've heard it's not too great (though I've not played it myself).

Neither Final Fantasy VII or VIII's PC ports were all that great to be honest. Inferior MIDI music compared to the PSone versions, unresolved bugs and compatibility issues that could make playing on a modern system even harder than it was to run the games back when they released, etc., though there are a few mod sout there to resolve some of these issues. You'll probably have to use a program like Joy2Key to use a controller in either games.

Still, I think VII would probably be the best place to start. It seems to be the one that has the most mainstream appeal, making it ideal for someone whose unsure of the series. Its plot isn't nearly as convoluted as VIII's can be and generally has a better character development system.

I'll get FF VII then. Thank you.

I'm on Windows 7 - any patches or mods I should get?

I agree with Wingus, I didn't have many issues per se but I did note how buggy the UI was and how prone it was to CTD's.

FFVII is decent for better plot and weapon+armor+materia+level system.

FFVIII has a better mini-game, and slightly refined graphics for it's time.

Both stories I liked, as somewhat confusing and muddled up as VIII's can be.

Oh, and for running it on Win 7 (i.e. crap OS), check this out:

Hah, I was just on that site! Thanks.

I got the official patch and that chocobo patch.

EDIT: I also found a high resolution patch, is it needed? [edit: no good download link available]

EDIT2: Found a good resolution patch link! Yay!
