First post!..... Hi

Post » Mon Jun 11, 2012 10:50 pm

Ive been lurking on the forum for a while, planning on becoming active so figured it polite to say a quick hello!.

I'm a 36 year old English guy. Around 65 hours into my second character, a level 25 Redguard who uses a scimitar and shield, wears light armour, is fairly handy with a bow and can sneak a little. He's also a budding alchemist. First character was an Orc but he kind of annoyed me so only put 10 hours into him.

I roleplay in as much as I try to sleep each night, eat 3 times a day and only do quests that feel right for my character. No real back story as such, he's pretty pissed off at the Empire because they very nearly removed his head from his shoulders, beyond that his only real ambition is to become rich, he will do anything for a bag of septums. He joined the companions to make easy money but hasn't been back since they suggested he become a werewolf. He visited the greybeards as he is curious about whether he can use the strange power he possess to make him money. He's considering joining the stormcloaks but not keen on the xenophobic Nords, so will only do so if it pays well.

Strictly no fast travel or carriages, I walk unless RP dictates otherwise. No HUD, and I dont allow myself to use the in game map unless in a city or town, or I bump into a non hostile NPC in the wilderness (I figure I wouldnt have a map with GPS that told me exactly where I was when out exploring, but if I happen across an NPC I could ask them).

I'm in no hurry and I'm really enjoying Skyrim, sure it has its flaws but on the whole it is a fantastic game.

I only discovered TES with Oblivion, which I played on PC. I'm playing Skyrim on PS3 (kind of miss the mods but theres more than enough in vanilla to keep me happy)

So anyway, HI! And sorry for rambling on slightly longer than I'd intended.

Hello and welcome to the forums :)
You say you play with the HUD off... Isn't that really difficult without crosshair and health bar?

I do turn up the opacity a little when in cities to prevent myself unintentionally stealing from shops, and you cant tell whether shops are open without in turned up a little so end up accidentally picking locks.

I always turn it off whilst out exploring, started doing so after reading a thread on here and I havent looked back since. For me it really adds to the sense of being lost in the wilderness, and since my guy is Redguard being lost in a foreign land.

With regards to the crosshairs, you soon become fairly adept with a bow without it. Sure you miss more than you would with crosshairs but that seems realistic to me.

I don't miss the health/stamina bar at all. If anything it adds to the tension of combat and you tend to err on the side of caution and drink a potion when you think you are close to dying. There are also the on screen blood splatters and the heartbeat sound that indicate when death is imminent.

As I said, turning the HUD off (whilst exploring) is the best decision I made in terms of maximising my enjoyment of Skyrim. I would advise anyone to try it for a couple of hours, you can always turn it on again if it isn't for you.

No worries it's a common mistake (I think), and some people don't even know that the community discussion exists (or so it seems).

Beat me to the punch. Welcome, and please don't be upset when this thread gets locked; it's honestly nothing personal.
