Fix from Steam Support for Crash on Launch

Post » Thu Feb 17, 2011 12:55 am

Please exit Steam and go to the folder called C:\Program Files\Steam\ (this is the default location for a Steam installation - if you set a different installation directory, you will need to browse to it). Delete all of the files in this folder except: The Steamapps folder and Steam.exe (If 'exe' is not visible, look for the black and white Steam icon) Restart your computer. Then, you will need to launch Steam.exe from within the Steam installation folder, and not from a pre-existing shortcut. With Steam running, re-test the original issue. Note: This process will not affect your currently installed games. Let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.

I did this last night, and it worked for me. No more crash to desktop when trying to launch the game.

The cause of the crash on launch is sadly not the same for everyone. This fix worked for you because your problem had to do with steam. GameOverlayRenderer.dll had a fault ( In the error report i saw in your previous topic) , so it prevented the application from executing .

Crashes on startup so far have been happening because of
- Codecs
- Conflicting Programs ( Media Players, Xfire , etc)
- StackHash Errors ( Probably related to DEP preventing execution of the program, but the main problem to why DEP would do that is unknown)

And the fix for each will be diff. Might be uninstalling codecs, closing background processes, or updating drivers, Disabling DEP for the program, etc.

This fix will not work for everyone but will work for people with Steam files faulting the games execution.

Of course, Cyborg112 is correct about this not being the fix for every issue every person ever has had or will have with this game. I should have been more specific regarding my issue. Here are some details so that others can make a decision as to whether this is the best solution for their particular problem...

The error I was dealing with looked like:
          1000 2 100 0x80000000000000 17139 Application FalloutNVLauncher.exe 1.2.14.0 4cc0aa7d GameOverlayRenderer.dll 0.94.9.25 4caa36f9 c0000005 00011ac3 151c 01cb734abda17fe0 x:\program files (x86)\steam\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas\FalloutNVLauncher.exe X:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\GameOverlayRenderer.dll fcabf509-df3d-11df-82e8-00248c777a6d

I am running Win7 x64 Pro. Steam was installed on my system prior to my purchase of FalloutNV. My system specs are in my sig.
