TV Flashes on and off when turning ceiling fan off...

Post » Wed Jul 27, 2011 11:17 pm

This is very strange and I've never heard of this happening before...I have a 42" 1080p HDTV that doubles as a computer monitor in my room and when you use the light-switch on the wall to turn the fan off the TV flashes off and then back on briefly. This happens when you turn the fan off in both my room and the room right next to mine. It does not happen when you turn the lights off..has anybody ever heard of something like this happening before? It sounds like there might be some faulty wiring between the outlet and the switch, but I don't know, my dad didn't have any clue what was going on with that either...and its not the TV because before my 42" I had a regular monitor that would react in the same way...

No offense to any electricians in the house.

have you researched the history of your house?

For example, was it built on top of an ancient Indian burial ground?

Lol, no, we built the house ourselves. Wierd thing is I have a power strip with my PC, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PS2 and sound system, among other devices plugged in to the outlet as well and its not affected by it.

Power strips have some really basic capabilities of protecting from small surges. Usually nothing fantastic, but obviously enough to protect them from the small surge flipping the switch creates.

Your issue is most likely the result of not using enough separate circuits when the house was wired. Ideally, every room would have its own circuit as well as each major appliance to prevent sudden power draws from distrupting flow.

Well there's your problem. You're probably very nearly overloading with all that stuff plugged in.
