Fletching: Stupid, or an amazing idea?

Post » Sat Jun 09, 2012 5:48 am

Iron. Steel. Ebony. Hell, i made a Daedric WarHammer, and Called it "The Candid Ambassador"! The point i'm trying to make here is that we can make a bewildering array of weapons and armor at forges, and improve them at associated tables, but we can't make arrows. The steel arrow quiver doesn't make my Daedric Armor look any sixier, and its infuriating how few higher-end arrows one can find out there. And in my travels, i came across a guy who tells me he's a Fletcher (Makes Arrows). And of course, i think: "Well why the hell cant i make arrows"?! So what im hoping would eventually come to pass, is that a Fletching table is added at all major forges, where you can make, and improve arrows (Say, 30 arrows an ingot?)

Thoughts?

Arrows could so easily be added to the Smithing Process as it stands right now.

I do have to say that buying enough arrows to keep me going is not that big a problem, but a bow is not my main weapon.

I agree that fletching should be put into Skyrim in some way though its most likely to be lumped in with the Smithing skill tree. I find it really annoying that you cant find many high level arrows, I have only ever found a total of like twelve daedric arrows in 150 hours worth of gaming :/

Why would they add fletching when they've been consistently taking away better skills with each subsequent generation?

If they bring back fletching then I demand the ability to use spears again. Even a long pointy stick would do.
Not to mention Athletics and Acrobatics because presumably some folks are so fond of emulating snails, sloths and tortoises that they couldn't handle a little freedom of movement.

Agreed, and didn't understand why they did not add them... Also why no Circlets under Jewelery? :(

All im trying to say is that it's infuriating that Higher-End arrows are so hard to find. and that i don't see why i couldnt improve arrows as well, My main guy is a lvl 49 imperial. Surely after all the time it took to get him to that stage, Ebony and Daedric arrows would be more commonplace?

Thinking of a different game (WoW), they did something bizarre... ammo was originally smithable, but then they made ammo infinite so you no longer had to buy or smith it. If I recall it was a much asked-for change by the community. Interesting that Skyrim folks are the exact opposite.

Indeed, having to acquire arrows helps the immersion. I would like to be able to make them, too.

If you make a strong enough bows, the arrows you use don't much matter any more.

At least it isn't like previous Elder Scrolls games where the stronger arrows were heavier (and when normal ones weigh 1 each, carrying around a load of daedric arrows REALLY wasn't worth it)... and also where bows and arrows really weren't feasible.

Meh. I also think it's stupid that i'm carrying around 726 steel arrows, and not a single pound encumbered. Personally, idve made every 20 arrows weigh a pound. And while you can acquire most arrows through playing, Arrows definitely should be made through smithing.

I don't remember fletching ever being a skill or function you could do outside of user mods. However I agree that fletching should've been a crafting option, along with spellmaking, brewing, and tailoring. This is what seems lacking in crafting systems.

Having fletching branch off of smithing would be really nice.

Fletching should have been included in the retail copy of the game.

Someone must have made the decision to replace fletching with guards doing target practice as a source of free arrows for everyone, and not just people with smithing.

This. When you craft them, you should craft stacks of 20 at a time.

Also, I wish Archery had actual abilities like Frost Arrow, Exploding Arrow, Multi-Shot, Shove, Set Trap and a few others. Archery is way too powerful and one-dimensional. Being able to have control over Arrows that Snare your target, explode in an AE radius, confuse your targets, push and stagger targets and set bear traps that root targets would be fantastic additions. I was very disappointed when I saw Perks and 90% of them just add more damage or something each "rank". Blech, ranked Perks or Skills are a terrible idea.

There are quiet a few people that sell arrows so you should be able to buy quite alot if your high enough level. Arrows should have weight i see no problem with arrows weighing 0.1 that way 100 arrows only encumber you 10 units. How thats considered to much i dont know.
As for crafting why we can make all things i dont know, 10 arrows per ingot would be more than enough, hell they could make a nice recipe from them using feathers, wood and ingots. Theyd need to make feathers more common tho, as ive only seen a hand full of eagles in several 100 hours of game play, but adding them to shop lists is hardly difficult.

It's a bad idea and completely unnessery and unwanted.

You don't need fletching, there's arrows everywere! There's arrows were you don't even want arrows! Most people sell them.
Fletching would be pointless, fussy and boring.

It should have been part of the game from the beginning.

Where to find arrows easily:
Spoiler
Look out for NPCs who practise their archery skills and take the arrows off the practise target. For example in Solitude can you find soldiers practising, and also inside the Thieves Guild will you find one who practises almost constantly. And on top of towers and look-outs leave many bandits arrows and bows around.

Then find an item that weighs MORE than it realistically should and carry it around arbitrarily with your arrows to even things out.

In the grand scheme of things to complain about, it seems a bit of a waste to complain about the things with really simple solutions.

Fletching was banned, since too many guards took an arrow in the knee

This would be the very reason I'm still using Nord arrows. I have over 500 and have the perk to recover more arrows. I would use higher end ones but just can't find enough.

To add to that:

I think (haven't personally tried) you can pick-pocket those NPCs to give them a better arrow, and they will start shooting it endlessly. Free ebony arrows?

Why I love the PC! There are a couple of mods that make it possible to smith arrows. If anything it helps make smithing less grinding.

LOL, though I keep thinking make to Morrowind where everyone called you a fletcher before trying to kill you.
