Flora....modders have do something about this

Post » Mon Jun 18, 2012 3:46 pm

As anyone that has been working in the CK knows, the Flora of skyrim is pretty slim...your choice consists of pine tree, birch tree or dead shrub....and the flower department is equally as boring....and if you want to make a world area thats not wintery or dead, you dont have the flora for it.

I myself can't make anything like that, but Im hoping that we can get some modellers to start working on some resources....as any resources made that this point Im sure would be greatly used.

Anyone want to step up and make some?

Hmm odd i find the flora perfectly fitting and plenty diverse for Skyrim. Now for new world area's yea we will need new vegetation for sure.

Thats what I mean, for Skyrm it fits......but for anything other...you cant do it.

Hell, you'd have trouble even making a pretty garden for the front of your house, there are next to no flowers in the game......which for house makers will be a big set-back.

I agree. It's really hard to make landscapes that don't look like Skyrim. We probably have less than half the options we had in Oblivion. I'm excited about the possibility of creating my own trees (no more speedtree) but I'm not sure the tools are currently up to snuff for making custom tree nifs (haven't checked). The tree/flora options in Skyrim look a lot better, but there aren't very many to choose from.

I was pretty disappointed to discover that I couldn't even use texture sets with trees, as that would have at least made it easy to provide some color variation: green aspens, yellow and white mountain flowers, etc. Creating a farm your only options are: wheat stacks, potato, leek, and cabbage plants. Where are the tomato and carrot flora? In Oblivion we had graqe vines, corn, and pumpkin patches. How about fields of uncut wheat? How about an apple tree? (Two, actually, since there are red and green apples.) Creating a red cabbage variation would just require a retex. (There's an easy one for a modder.)

I really hope someone takes this up. It would add tremendously to immersion. (I was going to make a short list of top picks, but I couldn't narrow it down to less than about 25 must haves. )

Can you import from Oblivion? Not sure if the flora there is much more diverse or if you can even do such a thing, Maybe making it from scratch would be easier.

It would definitely add some much needed life to the non snow covered areas, new areas and player houses/farms.

Importing meshes from Oblivion is illegal.

But I agree, new flora would be nice.

More variable flora is on my wish list too. My world would need everything from tropical to tundra flora.

Lets hope Vurt's got something up his sleeve. Until now he "only" did a great texturepack. Wondering if he's working on something.
Off topic with a hint of ontopicness: Do you think it's good to keep ones hope up for having shadows affect the grass one day that's tied to the textures? Or is modding that in rather undoable?

I'm now working on making more plants. I stared with spring flowers, fitting for the season :)
For this purpose I started a new thread here:
http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1362582-wip-spring-flowers/
Making the textures is not that hard. Making new models, well I have no idea how to do that. I'm thinking of duplicating existing grass models and re-skinning them instead.
Anyone who wants to join in the fun of making spring flowers?

I made a working tomato plant that you can pick the tomato off of. And I made a red and green apple tree that you can get apples from.
I will put a pic up in a few minutes...

Ok here are the tomato plants, with the green apple tree behind them.

I've also already been making new flora. Harvestable flora though. So far I've created a blueberry bush, apple tree, garlic plant, carrot plant, and sugar cane. Been also working on recreating Morrowind plants and so far have Trama Root, Stoneflower, Saltrice, Marshmerrow, Ash Yam, Green Lichen, Gold Kanet, and Luminous Russula. Currently working on Hackle-lo trees and giant Emperor Parasol.

While all of these are being used in a larger project of mine, I was planning on releasing early as some sort of separate modder's resource.

elinen and ChickenDownUnder, that is awesome!
My apple tree is lame compared to yours. But I really like my tomato plant, when you pick it, the one 'red' tomato vanishes from the plant. I will be releasing it tomorrow with my mod, the link is in my signature.

ChickenDownUnder, I would love to have and use your plants as a modders resource.

I have one request, could you make a 'wheat' plant? We have wheat in the game, and wheat 'stacks' but no actual wheat plants.

This guy did his own trees for his moonpath mod and provided them as a resource for modders...might use some of them in my next location mod.

That's six left to do, how could I forget Snowdrops... the only one flowering in my garden right now

Anyone have a favorite spring flower you would like me to try to do?

Why don't you try a Morning Glory creeping vine?

Guess I can go ahead and create that wheat plant. Not too different in design from my sugarcane plant, so wont have to do too mush mesh editing. Will take me a few days though, already promised to make a baby's cradle for somebody else's mod.

Trying to apply my texture to different grass meshes, but I'm running in to troubles. I have looked at your tutorial ChickenDownUnder, and I see it's for tree/plants, have anyone tried to do this for grasses and got it to work?
What I have done:
Change the texture links in Nifscope (under BSShader TextureSet/Textures)
In the CK I duplicate the grass, set a new name and change to the nif file (Art file, Edit)
Add the new grass to a land texture, and the CK complains, "MODELS: Could not load nif"

Any suggestion?

The solution was silly easy, I didn't have the nif files or textures in the correct folder. Nice when the problems are so easily fixed :)
