Just need a little clarification. I have Mercurio as a follower, do I understand correctly that putting Adept Robes (destruction enchantment) on him actually has no affect on his destruction magic abilities?

I think that all followers who have enchanted items equipped recieve the bonuses, however I can not give you the 100% correct answer. I have made a set of Steel Plate Armour and put an enchantment that increases the health of the user by around 60,000... I attached it to Lydia then hit her and she recieved no damage at all so thats the way I found out the enchantment works. If Mercurio attaches the Adept Robes that you give him then he will most probably recieve the enchantment bonus too.

I read on UESP that there are only certain enchantments which will work on followers. Stuff like Heath, stamina, magika. I don't think that skill enchantments work but I am not sure.

Robes have 0 armour rating so you can't make a follower wearing robes wear different robes. Unless, they are wearing hooded robes and you give them a helmet, then they will wear the robes which you give them.

I have wondered about this myself, IIRC the UESP list of enchantments that work for followers is pretty limited and the ones that Fortify and Magicka Regen aren't on it. But I'm pretty sure Marcurio "comes standard" with robes that have those enchantments, which seems pointless if they don't work for him. So is it just a matter of "this is what a mage at his level usually wears, so that's his default apparel" even if the apparel gives him no bump in either department?

I can't seem to get my dark brotherhood initiate to wear daedric chest or helmet or gloves. She wears the boots and shield, and chillrend... But that's all.

I got mine to wear elven chest, I think they are more likely to wear light armor because it's one of their skills.
